Jumping to different platforms, it is ok for your brand to have different voices. TikTok needs its Gen Z content, but this video would probably never be understood on Facebook Reels. With Everything You Need To Know • News, I embrace modifying to match followers, using trends and being ok with posting an “inside joke” that won’t make sense to all people. Over the past two days, this #CondimentCow video has blown up, reaching over 800,000 views for a cartoon looking condiment dispenser. A lot of that success involves keeping the commentary going. For this particular video, there was low-level playful competition between Europe and the US. I embraced that, explaining how “only US innovation could do this,” or using internet phrases like, “The European mind could never comprehend this.” Don’t be afraid to interact with your customers/followers in less business-term ways. It used to be that we had to seek out what to watch. But TikTok and YouTube’s algorithms powering their ‘for you’ pages are so accurate now at showing us stuff we want to watch, that it's more a case of opting-out, rather than in.  It’s got to the point that we don’t even really need to follow or subscribe to accounts anymore. The all-seeing algorithm knows us better than we know ourselves. So, what does this mean for you as a brand trying to crack platform algorithms to maximise your FYP impressions? It can be daunting to second-guess what’s inside the black box of algorithms. But the simple ‘hack’ is to behave more like the best social entertainers getting huge amounts of organic attention and audience love. They first immerse themselves in understanding what their audiences want and the role they want to play in their lives (and on their feeds). They get viewers’ attention by offering them something worth sticking around for. They keep their audiences entertained till the end, with twists and turns in their narrative arc. They engender a fan following for doing this consistently, over a long period of time. They realise the relationship with their audience is two-way, learning from their community and inviting them to co-create and shape what comes next. It's pretty rare one of the largest / most up and coming media platforms gets banned by the U.S. government. Has it ever happened? TikTok aims to be the first and I shared my thoughts with The Business of Fashion and Marc Bain on what exactly marketers should do in the case TikTok does actually get banned. Here is how the strongest brands are preparing: 1. Build a loose plan now. Don't wait for the ban to happen to begin planning. 2. Begin with known workstreams. It's far easier to shift funds, focus, and creative to a known channel you already work with - in this case, YouTube, Meta, Snap, etc. - rather than create a new way of working. 3. Once stable, begin laying your testing plan for new avenues. It's fine to reallocate to known channels in the short term, but simply putting more money in the same places as everyone else isn't a recipe for progress. Take your time, be deliberate, take chances. Brands that run structured testing (not testing for one week then pulling it) almost uniformly outperform those that stay safe. Loving this campaign for TikTok as a search engine, right down to the Happy Mondays track. And we're not just searching IN the app. TikTok videos are coming up organically as a huge percentage of Google search results, just because there are SO many of them. TikToks are targeted, quick and in a world where time is increasingly currency, they can win the war for attention. What does that mean for marketers and agencies? 1. TikTok in 2024 is going way beyond Gen Z; and we must move away from strategic and creative thinking solely targeted to that demo and 2. a world where TikTok can be performance marketing might not be so far away. We should be parsing that data early and often and bringing those insights to the table.
