Making Science Commonsense

Shock-and-Awe (cf. Bush) may be a good strategy for some ends, but, with the obvious disclaimer: in my understanding, titillating may not be the best way to see what young minds find interesting. Lest you be thinking: NO! We're on a mission to get them not-as-knowledgeable as us dem-kids interested in this or that that we think they should be interested, here's something that maybe relevant: if you want to get a kid, say, Bardo, to get interested in whatever she/he/heshe may find interesting, in a menu of potentially interesting things, then it is not without value to know where Bardo is at, in the first place.
Trust me: Kids, along with the uneducated laypeople, understand the blandness of the practice of science, where nothing happens most of the time, which is only compounded by the added difficulty of having to deal with the imperceptibly slowly developing proper understanding of whatever it is that is happening; all of this follows (if you into theory / abstract general) from the fact that scientists are all too human (physicists suck at biology; biologists have no clue about society; mathematicians are good at pretending as if they understood something they have no inkling ;)
Beginning with Einstein (https://lnkd.in/gn9rVV_h), along with many good contemporary mathematicians (https://lnkd.in/gH8Fd4Gi), and most important of all, the very mathematics of science highlights its correspondence with the mundane everyday life (https://lnkd.in/gw79Aea8). Science is no different from the mostly uneventful and yet difficult life! The difficulty is in bringing, in the words of Grothendieck, which late Professor Ronnie Brown often used to remind me, concepts out of the dark (cf. concepts are no celestial droppings; https://lnkd.in/gMkfhfZ5).
The idea of scientific outreach is, as has been recognized by many almost a century ago in my neck of the woods (e.g., Gora Science Centre, Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh), to facilitate conscious participation in the practice of science by anyone and everyone, i.e., make science commonsense (AND definitely not to deify scientists, with confabulated brains so special that they need a million or billion to make half-baked bs intriguing: I don't know what's the going rate for #StringTheory ;)
Merry Christmas :)
P.S. Is this wide-open eyes-n-mouth pic meant for representational purposes ;)
In collaboration with the National Science Foundation (NSF), NCER established a new R&D center on elementary science education earlier this year.
Through partnerships with STEM researchers and practitioners, this center will focus on increasing early pathways to STEM education and careers, particularly for students who are typically underrepresented in the STEM workforce.
