When 150 Pharma Supply Chain Directors were asked, “What are the top three challenges facing your organization when building a sustainable end-to-end supply chain?”, these were the top two responses (by far): #1️⃣ Difficulty to measure environmental impact across value chain activities (e.g. manufacturing eco-footprint, etc.) #2️⃣ Limited transparency and data sharing across the end-to-end supply chain Sonoco ThermoSafe’s Vice President Jim Lassiter, addressed these concerns by adding to the report, “The difficulty in accurately measuring the environmental impact across value-chain activities is a formidable obstacle. The intricate web of processes involved makes it challenging to quantify the carbon footprint comprehensively. Organizational priorities and a clear understanding of sustainability goals are key components of this strategy. These goals should encompass not only reducing environmental impact but also enhancing social and economic sustainability. When sustainability is integrated into the core mission of the organization, it becomes a driving force for change. Fostering a culture of sustainability is vital. Employees at all levels should be educated about the importance of sustainability and how their roles contribute to these objectives. As a recruiter in the packaging industry, I have had the privilege of working with top industry leaders and observing their strategies for success. One key lesson that packaging professionals can learn from these leaders is the importance of innovation and staying ahead of industry trends. Top industry leaders are constantly seeking out new technologies and methods to improve their packaging processes, and this proactive approach sets them apart from their competitors. Additionally, these leaders prioritize sustainability and environmental responsibility in their packaging solutions, recognizing the growing demand for eco-friendly options in today's market. By following their example, packaging professionals can ensure they are meeting the needs of both their clients and the planet.

I worked for a Supply chain leader that made "a joke" to deliver an effective message. This was many years ago when corporate sustainability initiatives were starting to emerge. A major customer had just added "sustainability" to our supply chain "report card" score. We were required to do a MUCH better job in certain areas to maintain our hard-earned, long-term "A" score. The joke or comment that finally convinced the leadership team to take focused and quick actions was: " I don't care about sustainability - I care about PROFITABILITY". We successfully kept the "A" by developing and successfully implementing ROI driven initiative. As consumers, we all experience the "cell phone in a refrigerator carton" syndrome, so we know it's real. To be effective in this cost saving (and sustainability) initiative, you will need reliable, accurate sellable item dimensions and weight. Successfully tackling and solving this issue starts with reliable, accurate detail for dimensions and weight for each sellable unit configuration. I can recommend packaging experts and the requited solutions to realize these savings!

Are you linking your #discounting and #excessinventory efforts with your #sustainability reporting? 41% of respondents acknowledge the importance of #supplychain strategy and operations in driving an #ESG agenda. However, only 32% report accurately measuring ESG impact of digital investments in the supply chain, found PwC 2023 Digital Trends in Supply Chain Survey. In fact, here at Spoiler Alert, we found a similar trend: only 36% of those managing #excessinventory programs link their efforts with their sustainability or ESG programs. While #discounting and excess inventory programs are typically a supply chain- and sales operations-led effort, coordinating with sustainability teams can yield numerous benefits. “If you want to make substantial improvements against your ESG or #sustainability goals, there’s no way to do it without supply chain playing a key role in that,” shares Michael Whitman, principal and operations transformation technology sector leader at PwC US.
