Even though 2023 has been a difficult year for the plant-based / alternative protein space, growth since 2018 has still been significant in this segment. It's important to remember that this is still considered a brand new category and building it takes time. On a personal note, I'm happy to see that the plant-based confectionery segment is gaining traction. It's about time. 😅 "Innova Market Insights data indicates that food & beverage launches with plant-based claims had a 26% growth from October 2018 to September 2023. Europe was the leader in launches, with a 41% share. While Dairy was the leading category, plant-based Confectionery is gaining ground fast. Plant-based products with high protein claims were also surging." Food Ingredients First

According to Keith Nunes and research out of Food Business News, “Cost reduction is the No. 1 trend that will influence food and beverage product development in the next 12 to 18 months.” Inflation has had food and beverages on a sharp price increase for the last several years. Bringing these prices back down will make it ten times easier to make products more accessible to consumers and their families – thereby making it more feasible overall to make innovative products long-term. #CostReduction #ProductDevelopment #Snacking #FutureOfWork

The FDA has recalled up to 28 Beverages from the market in 2024! So far this year there has been 28 Beverages recalled from the market by the FDA. This includes brands such as: - PepsiCo - Fiji Water - Charles Boggini - Powerade - House of Coffee - Enfamil ...and many more Reasons for the recall spanned a series of issues including: - Undisclosed ingredients (such as food dyes) - Harmful ingredients/chemicals (such as toxic metals) - Bacterial presence While most of these recalls will not likely cause any negative health effects to consumers, it is a huge hit to businesses as the cost of a recall and the negative PR that comes with it can be forever damaging. The FDA and Health Canada are both becoming more scrutinizing of the food and beverage industry. In particular they have put beverage brands under the microscope regarding ingredient labels. Health Canada has made many changes to requirements of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages starting in 2023 to ensure clear labeling for consumers. There are some big names on this list. Even the large players in the game can get hit with a recall. If you are starting up your own beverage business; do not let your company get hit with such an issue. These companies can take the hit usually, but a startup would be crushed pretty quickly. Invest in quality and regulation. Understand the requirements and find someone to help you build a system to protect you from these errors. This includes but is not limited to: - Approved Supplier program - Product Development/Review system - Change Management system - Co-packer Requirements and Expectations (signed in contract) - Audit and review of co-packers and 3PLs for traceability and recall Protect your business, your product, and your customers!
