Today, we mark #WorldObesityDay – an important reminder of the critical need to recognize obesity as a complex chronic disease faced by more than 8 million Canadians. While many believe it is simple, obesity is in fact a complex, multifaceted issue that goes beyond just weight. This is why at Novo Nordisk Canada, we are committed to driving change in how the world sees and treats obesity. We have an unwavering commitment to ensure obesity becomes a healthcare priority for Canadians and to help defeat the stigma people living with obesity often face. Together, we can pave the way for a healthier future. Some challenges can’t be solved alone. Obesity is one of them. #DrivingChange #NovoNordisk

The problem of BMI is significant in the lipoedema community and often a point of contention between doctors and lipoedema patients because many doctors confuse lipoedema with obesity. While obesity is a common comorbidity with lipoedema, it’s important to use a better metric than BMI to gauge the obesity component. Here is a nice paper you can refer your doctor to where waist to height ratio is described as a superior cardiometabolic disease risk marker over BMI. You can even check what your waist to height ratio is yourself at home. We want our waist measurement to be no greater than half our height measurement - the suggestion in this paper is anything over 0.5 would indicate that measures to counteract obesity would be warranted. Obesity is a significant “gateway to a range of other non-communicable and communicable diseases” and to prevent progression of lipoedema, should be addressed. I have a special focus in helping women with lipoedema and comorbid obesity reduce their waist to height ratio, and improve quality of life and healthspan. Let me know if you need help in this area. #lipoedema #lipedema #obesity #bmi #whr #waisttoheightratio

VIVUS is proud to partner with the World Obesity Federation and help create awareness and action around treating this chronic disease on #WorldObesityDay (March 4, 2024). Obesity is not only a risk factor for other diseases, it is a disease in its own right. As noted by the World Obesity Foundation, obesity was added to the sixth International Classification of Diseases in 1948. Yet over seven decades later, this classification has not been fully accepted. Although an increasing number of organizations and countries now recognize obesity as a disease, many still do not, hampering attempts to address the pandemic. Review the Healthcare professionals statement in the Obesity Factsheets section of the #WorldObesityDay website at https://lnkd.in/ei5dnZdC VIVUS is committed to advancing treatment options for obesity and offering much-needed hope to patients globally. According to the World Obesity Atlas 2022, there are 360 million people in Latam with #overweight or #obesity, which responds to 58% of the population. Each country faces different challenges when dealing with obesity. At Novo Nordisk, we work hard to drive change and to see obesity recognized as a chronic disease, breaking down the stigmas. Where we live, the food systems around us, and our opportunities to be active impact our risk of developing obesity. To date, 31 countries are leading the way to curb obesity by implementing the World Health Organization acceleration plan to stop obesity. My colleague Francesco Branca in a conversation with Vismita Gupta-Smith explains - in less than 5 minutes - some things you may want to know about obesity. 1-3 of 10 Indians have liver disease, says health ministry; here’s how to ensure you’re safe The Union Health Ministry has taken a proactive step to combat the rising prevalence of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) in India. It has released updated guidelines and a training manual to address this significant public health concern. NAFLD, closely linked to obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases, is a growing issue in India. According to Union Health Secretary Apurva Chandra, “India has taken the lead in recognising NAFLD as a major NCD…Out of 10, one to three people can have NAFLD,” he added, highlighting how widespread the issue is. To ensure liver health & prevent non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, especially in light of this alarming statistic, consider the following guidelines: 1. Maintain a Healthy Weight 2. Eat a Balanced Diet 3. Exercise Regularly 4. Avoid Alcohol and Toxins 5. Practice Safe Sex 6. Get Vaccinated 7. Be Cautious with Medications 8.
