Important shifts in the conversation about different ways to engage with regional communities about the changing energy system. In this opinion piece last week Forum member Satya Tanner CEO LAUTEC Group Australia explained how the community ownership opportunity was an important impetus for wind farm developers in Denmark: "(Those) that offered up share options and planning participation to communities were the only ones to successfully construct their projects. So successful that the Danish Government adopted the principle in 2009, requiring developers to offer up to 20% share options to all residents within 4.5km of an onshore wind farm project." It takes a village… The phrase/proverb “it takes a village to raise a child”, is also true/scalable when it comes to raise major renewable projects like the Cedar Creek Wind Farm⚡ 🌬️ ⚡ - It takes time, … a lot of years to come to fruition this kind of large scale renewable projects. - It takes committed & talented people, … more than 175 local jobs that were created during construction phase. - It takes local communities, stakeholders and local residents ensuring that projects like this integrate into their natural, social, and economic environments. 🏠 - It takes fruitful partnerships like the one : TotalEnergies and Clearway (5th largest U.S. renewable energy player) to continue to develop renewable assets. 🤝   Cedar Creek wind farm in Bingham County, Idaho, is a project developed and owned by Clearway Energy Group, originally approved in 2008. In CTV News Winnipeg’s recent video, they discussed an exciting new idea: Solar Panels Over Parking Lots! This concept could turn everyday parking lots into green energy hubs, helping generate clean, renewable energy across Canada. Inspired by successful projects abroad, like those at the Cincinnati Zoo, solar panels over parking lots can provide much-needed electricity while reducing our carbon footprint. France has already mandated that parking lots with 80+ spots install solar panels, and a recent report suggests that if Toronto follows this example, it could generate up to a third of the city’s energy needs. Jack Gibbons from the Ontario Clean Energy Alliance highlights the benefits, saying it could “clean our air, reduce our climate impact, and lower electricity bills”—a true win-win-win! The future of solar energy is looking bright as the Biden Administration proposes a major expansion of public lands available for streamlined solar development in the Western U.S. With aims to support the surge in solar energy projects, the plan updates the 2012 Western Solar Plan, identifying lands suitable for large solar projects across 11 states. The proposal balances conservation with industry needs and aims to shift land use from fossil fuel production to clean energy. While the plan has industry and some environmental support, critics argue it prioritizes industry over environmental concerns. What are your thoughts on the complexities of implementing renewable energy solutions in tribal communities? "Capacity development entails not only funding projects but also funding people, especially tribal energy champions, whose boots on the ground are essential for addressing inequities in energy distribution." ▶ Environmental injustices have left a legacy of skepticism towards large projects. ▶ Often, smaller-scale solutions like solar meet the community's needs without the complexities of larger projects. ▶ Essential needs, such as public health infrastructure often take precedence.
