Vision To Learn’s Post

During my time and economic development, one of the biggest strategic shifts was from myopically attracting job-producing businesses ➡️ to attracting both jobs and the ideal workforce to fill them. By the time this mindset shift happened, the unemployment rate in our county was well below 3%. While high employment is great for a community, it creates real problems for organizations that are ready to grow. The day I met Nancy Evanko, I didn't know much about workforce development (thankfully, she did!). What I came to understand is that the first step of attracting, upskilling and retaining your workforce is the same: placemaking and marketing. You have to create a space where people want to be, including the proper incentives and means to do so. Then you have to tell people about it. Fast-forward a few years, and I still have the pleasure of working with Nancy through the Loudoun Education Foundation, one of our favorite clients at POUNCE Solutions. Through LEF's support, the Loudoun County Public Schools are a great place to work, and LEF's educator scholarships create pathways for LCPS students and staff to become educators there. This is workforce development at its finest, and it's fun to work on campaigns like this. Congratulations to the scholars, and we'll see you back in Loudoun soon! As an educator myself, I always pose the question, "WHAT IS EDUCATION?" 📚 A plaque on the wall? 📚 Pedigree? 📚 Class rank? 📚 An advanced degree? 📚 Book smarts, rote memorization, and "spitting out" answers on an exam? 📚 Cut-throat mentality to outcompete others? 📚 Playing it safe with a degree that gets a high-paying job? 📚 Letting artificial intelligence do the "inconvenient" menial work? OR... 🤔 Learning all sides to an argument 🤔 Taking a lower grade by learning the concept instead of memorizing terms 🤔 Going out on a limb with "unsafe", untested hypotheses 🤔 Thinking outside the box 🤔 Willingness to be wrong 🤔 Being okay with imperfection and not having it all figured out 🤔 Being honest with ones own weaknesses 🤔 Filling in those gaps over time 🤔 Focusing on well-rounded growth 🤔 Helping others to grow and learn 🤔 Being empathetic and emotionally intelligent, as well as mentally intelligent 🤔 Lifelong learning no matter the subject matter or circumstances 🤔 Accepting the possibility of being a late bloomer 🤔 Fostering an innate human ability to learn, innovate, and expand ceaselessly Specifically for doctors, Dr. Gottesman's act of generosity encourages trainees to pursue skills and careers that best match their passion, rather than being stuck in a cycle of rote learning, lifelong competition, or incentives to specialize for financial reasons alone. Yvette Escobar, and student interns are spending year after year to grow the College Promise movement in 450 local communities and 37 states. That’s why we’re over-the-top thrilled to see Michael Bloomberg donating to Johns Hopkins University to provide free tuition to all medical students from families earning up to $300,000 a year AND room and board and fees for students whose families earn $175,000 or less. Johns Hopkins now is the fourth free/tuition medical school, following NYU, WashU-St.Louis, and Albert Einstein. Now imagine local students from underserved communities knowing that their community college and/university’s undergraduate College Promise will be there if they aspire to become a doctor or nurse! WASHINGTON POST 7-9-24 Higher Education $1 billion gift to make Johns Hopkins medical school free for most students. The donation from Bloomberg Philanthropies will also expand financial aid for the school’s other graduate programs, including nursing and public health.

“All current fourth-year students are set to be reimbursed for their spring 2024 tuition, the school said, and beginning in August, all current and future students will attend for free.” Isn’t it amazing to imagine the impact we can have on others? 🔥$1-billion Gift Will Boost Workforce Diversity by Making Tuition Free🔥 A $1-billion donation by former professor Ruth Gottesman to Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx will permit the school to waive student tuition — $63,000 per student per year — in perpetuity. The tuition waiver will enable local students and students from underrepresented groups to pursue medical education. Healthforce Center at UCSF's Director Sunita Mutha, MD talked with The Lancet to explain how this donation will trickle down by training diverse clinicians who are able to help improve health care locally by eliminating disparities and advancing health equity. Systemic factors that discourage students from pursuing medical school begin far upstream, with disparities in the funding of public grade schools and greater undergraduate loan debt loads. 🎈 Confession: I’ve Always Been a “Buy the Yacht” Dreamer, Until Now… 🛥️ Alright, I’ll admit it. Whenever I’ve played that “What would you do with a billion dollars?” game, my go-to was never about grand philanthropy. I was all about the yacht life, maybe a private island, or the fanciest hatchback on the market. Practical, right? But then, Ruth Gottesman went and flipped the script on me. Ruth recently donated $1 billion to a medical school for free tuition forever. And just like that, she made me think about my yacht-shopping daydream. It’s not just the generosity of the act that got me; it’s the sheer vision of it—investing in education, in futures, in possibilities. For someone who’s always seen a billion dollars through a lens of personal luxury (guilty as charged!), Ruth’s gesture has showed me a potentially new way to think-beyond the commercial and the fancies.
