How Getting Fired Helped Me Grow I used to work for a news casting company, and I was really passionate about my job. But when I asked my boss for a raise, she told me that if I wasn't satisfied with my current salary, I could leave. I was taken aback, but I decided to take a step back and assess my situation. I realized that I had achieved everything I set out to do that month, and it was time for me to move on. So, I sent my boss a message thanking her for the opportunity to work with her company, but I told her that I couldn't continue working for her anymore. And guess what? She was fine with it! I have to admit, I felt a little bad about leaving. I needed the money, and I loved my job. But sometimes, you have to take a leap of faith and trust that everything will work out. After I left the company, I decided to focus on building my skills. I applied for courses in speaking, writing, and video editing, and I worked hard to improve myself. A few months later, I got a call from my old boss asking me to come back to the company. She offered me a raise, and I was tempted to go back. But I had grown so much as a person and as a professional that I knew I deserved better. That's when it hit me - rejection is not always a bad thing. Sometimes, it's the push you need to grow and move forward. Don't be afraid to take risks and trust that everything will work out. Send me a DM let's bring your brand, page or group to Life and get your customers loyal to your brand for life. Real talk on a Friday: Trust Your Gut I went in-house at a company for about a month this year. They were and still are fantastic people, the culture was awesome, the pay was great. Per the job description, I'd be in a position of being able to have a say in the creative, collaborate with the creative director, art director and every department in the company. I resigned after a month. The reason? I simply was not the right person for the job. I was not what they needed and what they needed was not right for me. I'm a firm believer in time being an invaluable asset, especially in this day and age. One of the last things I ever want to do is feel like I am wasting someone's time or money, especially when that individual or company has taken a chance on me. About 3 weeks into this job, it very much began to feel that way. And while I know the company I was working for was probably too kind to let it be known, I could tell they were feeling that way as well. The quote that sealed the deal for me was being told: "I feel like I bought a Ferrari, when all we needed was a Volkswagen". While I took some initial offense to that quip, it did help me look at the situation objectively. What did they need? Clearly a local one man band camera operator and editor. What am I? A creative consultant-producer-director-cinematographer-photographer-production coordinator-editor-colorist in training-post production supervisor and world renowned crew coffee supplier (I'm forever a PA at heart, take care of your crew!) with international ambition and aspirations. Could I have done what they needed? Certainly, but it's just not where I am in this stage of my career anymore. I haven't been for some time, and forcing myself to do so would benefit neither party in the long-term. I mentally can't afford to feel like I am not doing everything within my capabilities to improve myself as a creative and professional filmmaker, a mindset which I feel ultimately benefits the people and companies who hire me. Those who hire you deserve your best and nothing less. While times are certainly tight right now, I haven't for one second questioned whether or not I made the right decision. You only get one life, and trusting my gut has yet to lead me astray. The work is still coming, and some legitimately exciting opportunities are beginning to line up for 2025. So all that being said, to quote Mr. Jobs: “Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” Hope ya'll are having a great Friday. Be well. - Joe

At Crowd, we don’t ask for CVs... Instead, we aim to fill roles by first having an introductory call. “We hear stories from people coming from all around the world and what makes them interested in cultural strategy,” explains our Director, People & Culture, Alexandra Smith. Getting people who have different ways of looking at culture is one of the things we do differently to cultivate 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗱, 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 for our clients. We think it means our team is pretty special, diverse and leads with consumer behaviour in mind as well as understanding and engaging with the whole person. But don’t just take our word for it – watch our meet the team series from our 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗼. First up, Project Producer Olivia Penhallow shares how her enthusiasm for casting (not recruiting) and supporting people on the participant journey as a Project Producer is cultivated by her work as an actor and script writer. Thanks to our production team Douglas Chalmers, Eve King and Jennifer Robinson for getting us in front of the camera!

This happens enough with 🎥 interviews that I had to do a post about it. Below is an “editing room” shot from a recent interview with a VERY nervous executive (who will remain anonymous). Too many biz leaders will never talk about your company on camera because, well, you know you just aren’t very good on camera 🤷🏼♂️ Fear not. Just speak freely. Be yourself. I clean up 99% of interview tracks anyways. Nervous ticks and tendencies are fixed “in post” by placing your audio track and cutting out your pauses (see the lines vertical below), the ums, uhhs, errs, stutters, and blend it all into clearly delivered thoughts. #videocontent #creativeagency #productionlife #videographer #filmmaker #branding #brandcommunications #editor #helicopter #avgeek #aviationmarketing #sportsmarketing #protip
