Today, Michelle Kanter Cohen, Policy Director and Senior Counsel at the Fair Elections Center released a statement on House Passage of the so-called “SAVE Act,” which would make it harder for millions of Americans to vote. “The so-called SAVE Act is a cynical attempt fueled by anti-immigrant politicians and conspiracy theorists to make it harder to vote and spread distrust in our elections. As an organization that has litigated against documentary proof of citizenship requirements because they make it harder for eligible people to vote, we’ve seen that hard-to-get and expensive document requirements make it harder for citizens to vote, and don’t solve any problem with our elections. Recent studies show that around ten percent of voting-eligible Americans do not have documents to show their citizenship. Those citizens are more likely to be women, low income people, and from communities of color." Read our full statement: bit.ly/fecsaveact

Democracy Needs You: Combatting Election Fatigue 📅 From 1848 to 1971: The journey to universal suffrage in Europe was long and arduous. Each milestone was a victory for democracy, from men gaining the vote in the 19th century to women finally being enfranchised in the 20th century. 🏛️ 🔍 Today's Reality: Despite these hard-won rights, voter turnout is declining. Disillusionment and political apathy are rampant. But democracy needs participation to thrive. 🎯 Steps to Reinvigorate Democracy: ▪ Educational Outreach: Reviving the history and significance of voting. ▪ Engaging Campaigns: Transparent and relatable political campaigns. ▪ Electoral Reforms: Making the voting process easier and more accessible. ▪ Community Engagement: Showing tangible results of local participation. 🌍 Be the Change: Let's revive the belief that every vote counts. 🧨Boost your political savvy or 🏃♀️ Run for office and #GetElected ✅ 👉I help leaders master BOTH types of politics.
With #localcouncil elections looming in Victoria and NSW, voters will soon be bombarded with political pamphlets. You might think that as someone passionate about politics, I would find it fascinating to read campaign flyers. But I don't. 🙄So many flyers are forgettable, boring, ineffective, and a waste of campaign funds. I'm on a mission to support more women getting elected to political office in across Australia That's why I committed to delivering today's super-charged Masterclass with Women for Election. Together with Licia Heath, we had a full house of keen, committed candidates (and their supporters) who were keen to learn all about *HOW TO STUFF UP YOUR CAMPAIGN MESSAGING.* In this Masterclass, I explained what makes a crap campaign message - and what to avoid. I shared tips on how to grab attention, write a pitch that resonates with voters, and, most importantly, motivates people to vote 1 for you. Have you been a candidate? Or are you currently running? See the ten common mistakes I (too) often see in campaign messaging. Is this list familiar to you? Are there others? How many of them have you made? If you feel like sharing in the comments below, please let me know. #StandForOffice #SheStands #VoteForHer #WomenLeadingLocally #PoliticalCampaigning

Before elections, women can engage in community-building initiatives, dialogue sessions, and advocacy efforts to promote peaceful coexistence and discourage divisive rhetoric. During elections, they can serve as mediators, peacekeepers, and educators, working to defuse tensions, monitor polling stations, and ensure fair electoral processes. After elections, women can continue their efforts by promoting reconciliation, fostering dialogue between conflicting groups, and advocating for inclusive governance structures that prioritize the needs of all citizens, irrespective of ethnicity or gender. The Relevance of Elections: Between Disillusionment and Low Participation (PART2) 🔍 Low voter turnout threatens the legitimacy of democratic institutions. If only a minority participates, elected officials don't truly represent the popular will. This can lead to a legitimacy crisis, where political decisions are seen as illegitimate and contested. ⚖️ When moderate voters abstain, extreme voices gain proportionally. This leads to increased polarization, where pragmatic solutions become scarce. The radicalization of political discourse and positions further alienates citizens from the democratic process. 🔧 It's imperative to rethink our democratic system, envisioning a Democracy 2.0 that leverages new technologies for direct majority input on critical issues. Citizen participation must be revitalized to restore trust and legitimacy in institutions. 💻 Modern technologies offer tools for a more direct and participatory democracy. Secure online voting platforms and open discussion forums could allow citizens to express their views directly on important decisions. This would bridge the gap between elites and citizens, ensuring that policies genuinely reflect popular concerns. 🌐 Low voter turnout is a symptom of citizens' disillusionment with political parties. To restore trust and revitalize democracy, it is crucial to rethink our democratic system. By adopting a Democracy 2.0 that incorporates new technologies for direct citizen participation, we can build a society where political decisions truly reflect the people's will. It is time to transform our approach to ensure legitimate and effective governance. #Elections2024 #Democracy #VoterTurnout #PoliticalTrust #CitizenEngagement #PoliticalDisillusionment #DemocracyReform #TechInDemocracy #DigitalVoting #EuropeanPolitics #CivicParticipation #PoliticalCynicism #DemocraticLegitimacy #Polarization #Democracy2_0 #FutureOfDemocracy #DirectDemocracy #PoliticalReform #TechForGood #VoterEngagement #PoliticalChange
