In the words of our very own Roger Holm, President of Wärtsilä Marine and EVP of Wärtsilä: “We need to future-proof the shipping industry.” As an industry responsible for transporting over 80% of world trade, maritime shipping serves as the lifeblood of the global economy. However, in just 25 years – the lifetime of a single vessel – shipping needs to get to net zero emissions. This week, Roger joined Sumit Bose, founder and host of the Net Hero podcast, to discuss the challenges and opportunities faced by shipping in line with current and upcoming regulations and policies, as well as the solutions available today for ship operators to make emission cuts.🎙️ In particular, Roger highlighted the importance of investing in fuel flexibility: “Recently, we have gone from a single-fuel environment to a multi-fuel environment. [New engine technology] gives you the flexibility to change the ship during the lifetime of the vessel, which is necessary for us to get to net zero by 2050. “The feebate-like system not only neutralises the cost difference between conventional fuels and lower carbon fuels, but it actually incentivises the use of green fuels thanks to the credit system. With our Aurora Class project, we've shown that when bold investments meet strong collaboration, even the toughest challenges can be conquered. But our journey doesn’t stop here. The finish line for a net-zero future is still ahead. By 2027, our vessels will be ready to run on ammonia, driving demand for sustainable fuels and setting the stage for a cleaner future. However, to make sustainable fuels the norm, we need the right frameworks in place—until cost parity with conventional fuels is achieved. This is the grand finale that will define the industry’s transition to net zero. We believe it’s possible. We've done our part, but decarbonization is a shared mission. Together, we can create the momentum needed to transform the future 🤝 ✅ The first Aurora Class vessels will initially run on LNG, with a 58% lower carbon footprint than the standard PCTCs in the industry.  ✅ Our goal: Operating Aurora Class vessels on ammonia by 2027, driving us toward net-zero.  ✅ We've signed Letters of Intent (LOIs) with leading ammonia producers, ensuring a reliable supply for our operations starting in 2027.  ✅ Our crew has undergone specialized training for the past two years to safely and efficiently operate our Aurora Class vessels on both LNG and ammonia. Due to the uncertainty around which alternative fuel is likely to become widespread, both in its availability and cost effectiveness, owners and operators must play a balancing act between long-term viability and immediate decarbonisation in the here and now. In the words of our very own Toni Stojcevski, General Manager of Project Sales & Development at Wärtsilä Marine: “In order to reach the 2050 IMO target we need the industry to cross-collaborate. With countries setting ambitious targets to reduce their carbon emissions to net zero levels, there is an urgent need to crack the problem of long-haul and heavy-duty transport. The transportation sector heavily depends on fossil fuels and contributes over 20 percent of global emissions.
