This alarming reality demands immediate action, and The Black Sanctuary is rising to the challenge. Honoring Dr. King is important, but continuing his activism against white supremacy and working to advance anti-racist policies and practices is much more critical (and time-sensitive!). It's not enough to mouth the words of his iconic speeches and pay lip service to the legacy of leaders from the last civil rights era. This country's history of slavery, voter suppression, redlining, and other forms of systemic discrimination continue to get in the way of Black children and their families. WE CAN CHANGE THAT. Slavery was abolished by the Thirteenth Amendment, which was ratified on December 6, 1865. However, it took nearly two years for all of the states in the Union to ratify the amendment. There is still progress to be made today in terms of equality and equity. Juneteenth is an important day to reflect on our country's history and consider the many ways we can continue to make strides to close gaps and end racial injustice. A few ways you can encourage your team to observe Juneteenth include: Speak up when you witness acts of discrimination, hate, or racism Volunteer at organizations that defend civil rights or promote social action Support Black-owned businesses Encourage open dialogues about race with your friends and family Diversify your media consumption to include Black voices

Dr. King fought for equality. Today, we strive for equality and equity. Equity is when each person is treated in ways that give them an even footing. In pretrial justice, imposing the same financial release condition on each arrested person could be seen as treating them equally. But we know not everyone has equal access to money. Ordering conditions of release based on each person’s situation and abilities is a more equitable practice. So, I just finished reading this game-changer of a book—Michelle Alexander's "The New Jim Crow." Amazed by how deep it digs into the racial inequalities that are sadly woven into the fabric of the U.S., especially when it comes to mass incarceration. The stats alone in this book are mind-blowing, giving us a reality check on the deep-seated issues in our justice system. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: 1/3 black men in the United States carry a convicted felon label. The book doesn't just throw numbers at you; it gives you a history lesson you didn't know you needed. It tracks racial discrimination all the way from the slavery era, through the Jim Crow period, right up to what's happening today. It's like connecting the dots on a giant, complex puzzle of systemic inequality. Makes you realize that today's issues aren't just random events but part of a messed-up tradition. Now, what really makes "The New Jim Crow" stand out are its gutsy arguments. Alexander pulls no punches, challenging what many of us take for granted about race and justice in America. It's the kind of read that shakes up your thinking and sparks some real talk about society's deep-rooted issues. Look, we're living in times where social justice is front and center, and this book couldn't be more relevant. It's not just a read; it's a transformational experience.
