https://lnkd.in/eijmv3tp To the uninitiated, there are several organizations similar to the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) that focus on driving innovation within the defense sector. Here are some off the top of my head: In-Q-Tel: Often referred to as the @CIA's venture capital arm, In-Q-Tel invests in cutting-edge technologies to support the mission of the intelligence community. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA): DARPA is known for its research projects aimed at maintaining technological superiority for the U.S. military. National Security Innovation Network (NSIN): NSIN works to build a diverse network of innovators and entrepreneurs to solve national security challenges. Army Applications Laboratory (AAL): AAL focuses on rapidly developing and fielding innovative solutions to meet the needs of the U.S. Army. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL): AFRL conducts research and development to provide innovative technologies for the U.S. Air Force and Space Force. NavalX: NavalX serves as the Navy's innovation arm, working to accelerate the adoption of new technologies and processes across the naval enterprise. Defense Innovation Board (DIB): The DIB provides independent advice and recommendations on innovation-related matters to the Secretary of Defense and other senior leaders. In order to gain the maximum potentials of innovation you need to change the mechanism how you contract, execute, implement and update your process accordingly. Otherwise the desired outcomes will not happen in sufficient pace. And the system will backfire. The process of traditional defence force building up is not relevant to disruptive parallel procedures. There is one thing that’s its still traditional - and that’s how you mesaure your success- by seeing how many systems you deployed in the field, operating and changing the way you operate, changes your concept of operations, and TTP’s. From my perspective and experience it’s hard but it’s doable… and it’s worth it. Good luck
Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) was proud to provide testimony with our partners, Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering and the Under Secretary of Acquisition & Sustainment on "Outpacing China: Expediting the Fielding of Innovation.” Together, we are focused on identifying the military’s most critical operational challenges and rapidly delivering the best #technology solutions to the men and women in uniform. We look forward to continue to share how DIU is working to remove barriers in our mission to accelerate commercial technology across the DoD. This Wall Street Journal article from former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and former Congressman Mike Gallagher, who served as chair of the Select China Committee, accurately captures the need for the Pentagon to innovate and invest in the defense technology ecosystem in the United States. Adversaries like China and Russia are making more investments and deploying new technologies now. I have the benefit of seeing new technologies being developed by companies, big and especially small ones, that can address our national security needs ...but remain tied up in Defense Department bureaucracy. https://lnkd.in/e_-Xp-R2

Exciting news coming out of the Defense Innovation Board with the announcement of two studies aimed at fostering innovation alongside our allies and driving faster tech adoption via aligned incentives. If the two studies named "Optimizing How We Innovate with Our Allies and Partners" & "Aligning Incentives to Drive Faster Tech Adoption" can deliver against the goals outlined in the article below, the US, our allies, and our coalition partner nations will all benefit. BCE will be tracking these studies with a particular eye towards the roles that industry can play. #aerospaceanddefense #innovation BCE Consulting (BCE) Craig Belanger Anirudh Suneel Ben Osterholtz Robyn Pirie

Defense Innovation may be one of the buzziest phrases in the national security industry, but the message here couldn’t be clearer: Defense Innovation is a strategic imperative. In this article from The Wall Street Journal, Former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta admits that the U.S. may not be capable of matching our adversaries’ “sheer production volume” in advanced manufacturing or emerging technology, but instead “our path forward lies in America’s capacity to innovate.” At Ignite Digital, we are dedicated to fostering innovation. We are passionate about providing digital solutions to our national security clients by blending technology with business needs. Our Digital Innovation Center of Excellence (DICE) aims to shape the future of the digital landscape for organizations such as the US Navy’s PEO for Digital and Enterprise Services. Together, we can ensure the Navy and United States Marine Corps maintain a decisive information advantage – “any data, any time, anywhere.” #weareids #defenseinnovation #usnavy #usmc #nationalsecurity

"The integration of disruptive technologies into national defense strategies is a pivotal aspect of maintaining a competitive edge in modern warfare and security. Marcantonio Global's collaboration with the U.S. Department of Defense exemplifies a proactive approach to innovation, focusing on key technological areas that are vital for national security. The alliance's efforts in scouting and accelerating potential capabilities within these domains underscore the importance of public-private partnerships in advancing the military's technological prowess. The Defense Logistics Innovation Forums and the DoD Centurions Program are indicative of the commitment to fostering a culture of innovation that can yield transformative solutions for defense and security challenges. The involvement of senior Pentagon leadership further emphasizes the strategic significance of these initiatives, aiming to create a robust pipeline of advanced technologies that can be integrated into defense strategies effectively." - Co-Pilot, AI

Realtime: China is conducting what they term ‘punishment drills” in the Taiwan Straits, as Taiwan swore in its new democratically elected leader, Lai Ching-te from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), which is a pro-sovereignty political party. China argues that the new president is a separatist, as Taiwan is an integral province of China. President Xi Jinping has repeatedly stated that force is on the table to support China's goal of reunification. The Dalai Lama is a separatist too, as per China; which implies: No talks! No communication! No dialogue! The Military Drill: This particular drill has been named the Joint Sword Drill. These military drills are anticipated, as a show of joint force, power projection, and Chinese intent regarding Taiwan. One of the intents is to showcase to Taiwan that its east is completely exposed to Chinese attacks. In these drills, China is practicing missile targeting, precise location mapping, and joint operations. As per Taiwan’s military, the PLA stayed outside the 24 nautical miles from Taiwan’s waters, and did not carry out live-fire exercises in the Taiwan Strait or the sea (Only inland). No ballistic missile firing as well, compared to the 2022 drills where China did fire ballistic missiles over the Taiwan Straits. In this 2024 military drill, China did not declare any no-fly zones. The 2024 drill appears to be about power projection, with China testing its third aircraft carrier, to showcase its presence across the South China and East China Seas, and Taiwan Straits. China’s Intent: Political: Punishment for separatist activities specifically Taiwanese citizens voting for Lai as President! The military goal is a blockade, specifically cutting off Taiwan’s access to support from the U.S. and its allies (read Japan), and its energy imports via the East. Moreover, as per Chinese military sources from the Eastern Theatre Command, “the drills focus on joint sea-air combat-readiness patrol, joint seizure of comprehensive battlefield control, and joint precision strikes on key targets…the exercises involve the patrol of vessels and planes closing in on areas around the island of Taiwan and integrated operations inside and outside the island chain to test the joint real combat capabilities of the forces of the command”. Who is involved: As per Li Xi, spokesperson for China’s Eastern Theatre Command, the Command involved in these joint exercises, the “military services including the army, navy, air force and rocket force of the theater command are being organized to conduct the joint drills, code-named Joint Sword-2024A”. They are being conducted in the Taiwan Strait, the north, south and east of Taiwan Island, as well as areas around the islands of Kinmen, Matsu, Wuqiu, and Dongyin". Overall focus: Joint operations! The strategic question: These drills have lost their surprise factor but still carry power projection capabilities. I noted how joint warfare is a focus of the PLA! And it includes space!
