What *is* an "estuary"? They're where fresh river water meets salty sea water, creating unique ecosystems. The Hudson Valley boasts one of the world's most diverse estuaries. Discover how multiple NYSDEC programs support and maintain this vital ecosystem. Learn more from this insightful video, featuring views of Scenic Hudson parks: https://lnkd.in/gVFwZW5

In this post at Si I discuss the different ways to approach leverage points: https://lnkd.in/etNxsKxW One way to think about the ideas is by using the analogy of a river, where at its source, it is but a small trickle, while once it reaches the sea, it may become a huge and forceful estuary. Making changes downstream at the estuary will require great energy and resources and may easily get overwhelmed by the force of the river at this stage. However, if we move upstream to the river's source and make changes there, our resources can be much more effectively applied and may have a transformative effect. There is a particular importance and urgency to peatland restoration in the South West. Researchers from the University of Exeter estimate that less than 1% of Dartmoor’s blanket bog is still functionally intact. The peatlands of Exmoor, Dartmoor and Cornwall also lie at the most southerly and westerly limit of the bioclimatic envelope of peat-forming ecosystems i.e. areas with suitable temperature, rain and weather conditions. That makes our peatlands particularly vulnerable to extreme weather and drought, and act as invaluable indicators of what may happen to other peatlands as the climate warms and rainfall patterns change. We're working together to prevent further erosion and degradation by improving the hydrological function of the peat and working to achieve all the short and long-term benefits that peatland restoration brings about for wildlife, water, people, archaeology and the planet. The Arcane Texas Fact of the Day: Galveston Bay is the largest estuary on the Texas coast and the seventh largest in the United States. An estuary is defined as "a partially enclosed coastal body of brackish water with one or more rivers or streams flowing into it, and with a free connection to the open sea." Estuaries are transition zones between river environments and ocean environments.

🌿 **A Glimmer of Hope at the Hollywood Cross: Gila Woodpeckers Still Thriving** 🌿 In the midst of ongoing challenges to preserve our natural and cultural heritage, it's heartening to share some good news. Despite the desecration and destruction of Native American burial grounds and religious monuments, two resilient Gila Woodpeckers have been spotted at the Hollywood Cross. These beautiful birds, known for their distinctive black-and-white barred backs and tan heads, are a symbol of perseverance in our urban landscape. The Gila Woodpecker, typically found in the deserts of the southwestern U.S. and Mexico, has adapted to urban environments, often seen foraging in trees and even visiting feeders¹². Their presence at the Hollywood Cross is a reminder of the delicate balance between nature and urban development. As we continue to advocate for the protection of indigenous sites and the accountability of government officials, let's also celebrate the small victories in our environment. Every sighting of these woodpeckers is a testament to the resilience of wildlife and the importance of our efforts to protect their habitats. Let's keep pushing forward, not just for the preservation of our cultural heritage, but also for the thriving of our natural world.
