As a production company and post-house Motherland’s ethos has always been supporting emerging talent within the film and commercial sectors. Aside from being popular in film festivals, #short #films can act as a calling card for budding filmmakers. They can showcase acting, technical, or screenwriting talent and act as a barometer for the market appetite for a short film. They can attract more influential talent to help them build a career. In other cases, they are the first step to something bigger. If all the required resources aren't available to make a feature film or TV show at the time, filmmakers might make a short as a proof of concept to set up a premise, characters, situations, or a locale for a feature film, television or web series, or other storytelling experience. #writing https://lnkd.in/gfX_Cb6i

What Can Jackson Pollock Teach Us About Film & TV? https://ift.tt/52SAl38 Art history is the culmination of something that has a foggy beginning. First, we painted on cave walls. Then, as time went on, we developed, practiced, and made the world our canvas. We painted on churches, canvases, brick walls, and even our bodies. As art transformed and shifted mediums, things got expensive. Artists like Manet, Da Vinci, and Michelangelo needed wealthy patrons to make the dreams in their head come true. Now, portraits and more traditional art was always easier to fund, but by the early 1900s rolled around, and Jackson Pollock wanted his go, things got a little dicey. Check out this video from Nerdwriter for more on the evolution of art! What Can Jackson Pollock Teach Us About Film & TV? So what does this have to do with film and filmmaking? I believe we are on the cusp of another era that will define film moving forward. Much like Pollock, abstract expressionist and other modern artists had to struggle to be accepted by the aristocracy and patrons, so are the newest forms of filmmaking and television struggling for mainstream acceptance...and pay. The DGA just announced they won't honor movies that release day and date, which feels shortsighted given streaming is where all the work has gone. Places like Quibi are breaking up content into 8-15 minute chunks so they're more digestible, and YouTube is the second most visited site on the internet. Business is changing. Everyone sees streaming coming and the "feud" between Spielberg and Netflix caused many people to question if old Hollywood had grown out of touch. We're at the brink of our own Pollock era. I have no idea what's coming next, except to say it feels like we're going to create most content to be viewable on phones or as events for theatrical release. Whatever the case may be, I encourage you to keep chasing your ideas and see how Pollock and the evolution of our art can inspire your next works. What's next? How Location and Visual Motifs Tell the Story in 'Widows' Steve McQueen's heist thriller Widows incorporates the city of Chicago in amazing ways, teaching us how setting can be an important character in a film. One of the most important things to take into consideration before you start the production of you short film is the location in where it takes place, so here are some insights that will help you to create an exceptional short film: - Choosing fantastic locations adds production value without spending lots of money. It has a big impact on how the film looks and feels for the audience. - For residential properties, Airbnb and VRBO are great platforms. - Focus on locations that you can get for low or no cost, they are one of the areas you can usually save a lot of money. - The best locations are ones that you have full reign over and don’t have to worry about people coming in and out of. - The less travel or company moves you have to do the better. In this digital era, the surge of aspiring filmmakers parallels the guitar boom of the 80s that ran through the early 2000s. The accessibility of filmmaking tools, coupled with film schools and courses capitalizing on young ambitions, mirrors how the guitar industry played on the dreams of aspiring rockers. However, akin to the plethora of technically proficient but emotionally disconnected guitar players, today's filmmakers often prioritize imagery and content creation over storytelling. Enter the world of paint-by-numbers "how-to" guides, seminars, masterclasses, websites, consultants, and podcasts – the modern equivalents of the guitar tutorials that flooded the market in the past. These resources claim to teach everything from screenwriting to directing and even the intricacies of raising a production budget. Much like aspiring guitarists looking for shortcuts to virtuosity and dreams of stardom, filmmakers are drawn to budget-friendly solutions and content that will get picked up by a streamer. The risk lies in neglecting the crucial importance of possessing a profound understanding of authentic visual storytelling craftsmanship and innovation, as the aforementioned resources often emphasize formulas at the expense of the art of narrative. As filmmaking becomes the new rock band, aspiring directors must navigate these resources carefully, ensuring they complement, rather than replace, a deep and historical understanding of storytelling in the cinematic medium.

Every Type of Film Goes Through Three Phases of Storytelling. Writing. Shooting. Editing. Don’t Overlook the Last One. An Editor is Worth Her (or His) Weight in Gold. Listen to The Master of Cinema. I Wonder Everytime I’m Not Asked to be a Part of the Edit, Why? As a Director I Care About the Product Through to The End. If You Want to Make Sure Your Creation has the Right Emotional Balance Be Sure a Woman Leads AT LEAST One Aspect of This Process. Writer | Director | Creative Producer | Cinematographer | Editor

Film Director / Filmmaker - Known around the world for original content winning hearts 💕 and awards! Full of PASSION, EXPERIENCE and CONFIDENCE!
Behind every successful film, for sure there is a bunch of unexpected challenges. In my latest feature film, we faced a unique problem. Rather I’d call it a hiccup! The script, which we were in love with, was 12 minutes too long for the festival we had our eye on. We were stuck. What could we cut? We sat down, ate some pizza, and watched the whole movie while carefully analyzing scene by scene to see the lag that we could knock off. We looked for scenes that were repetitive, didn't move the story forward or felt out of place. We made tough decisions, cutting moments we genuinely loved. It was heartbreaking. But the result was worth it. The film was streamlined and more impactful. The lesson? Challenges are always not as simple as they seem; not necessarily complicated either! And there are no short cuts when you are conscious about the quality and the results! They're sometimes sparked by misunderstanding or miscommunication too! And the only way out? Communication. P.S:- So, what’s your recent challenge that turned into your biggest win? Do let me know in the comments! _______________________________________________________ #filmmaking #directorslife #producerdiaries #moviemagic #behindthescenes #cinemaart #indiefilms #filmindustry #moviemakers #cinematography #boxofficehits #filmproduction #screenwriting #moviepremiere #filmcrew #upcomingmovies #filmdirectors #movieproducers #hollywoodinsider #bollywoodbuzz

The filmmaking process can be complex and challenging, with numerous creative decisions to be made at every stage. Previously, we spoke about the importance of how a good writer is essential to the success of a film. Now we'll delve into how when good writers' rooms are set up, much of the headache associated with the process of writing a compelling story is alleviated. Healthy collaborative spaces foster creativity, streamline ideas, and ultimately alleviate much of the stress in the later stages of producing the film. In writers' rooms, ideas are shared, developed, and refined. They provide a supportive environment where writers can bounce ideas off one another, receive feedback, and work together to craft compelling stories. By encouraging collaboration and creativity, writers' rooms help streamline the filmmaking process, ensuring that the final product is cohesive, engaging, and true to the filmmaker's vision. They play a crucial role in shaping the story and tone of a film, making them a valuable asset to any production. While countless screenwriters exist in the industry, only a select few have the opportunity to pitch their scripts to decision-makers who hold the power to greenlight projects. This gatekeeping often leaves many talented writers struggling to break into the industry. Additionally, access to decision-makers who have the power to greenlight projects is often limited. This lack of access can be a major barrier for aspiring screenwriters, preventing them from showcasing their work and realizing their full potential. It also contributes to a lack of diversity in storytelling, as voices from underrepresented communities struggle to be heard. To address this issue, it's crucial for industry experts, those with the power to open up spaces for new, authentic and voices to be heard, to bridge the gap between screenwriters with decision-makers. In doing this, not only does the film industry become more vibrant and inclusive, but new audiences will be created with higher expectations and greater demand. #soozhalcineemas #screenwriters #writing #writer #soozhal #cinema #filmmaking
