I was just perusing Nude Beverages website and noticed that they had a separate tab entitled "Animal Rescue". Intrigued, I checked it out. Animal wellbeing is where I typically focus my own philanthropic efforts and seeing that a portion of all of their sales goes towards a number of local organizations actually made me want to join their team! Seriously. And to see it so front and centre on their website made me feel that their efforts are authentic. Did you know that 61% of Millennials would consider a company’s commitment to the community when making a job decision? If you’re searching for a way to draw in younger employees, and encourage them to stay with your company, improving your corporate giving programs could benefit you greatly. Constituent education or fundraising? If you work for a nonprofit and you want to keep your job, you better have answered fundraising. The pressure in the top-down management structure and philosophy of most nonprofit organizations is firmly directed at fundraising. However, leveraging opportunities to educate the public about core mission goals can often achieve the same objectives as major appeals, often at a lower net cost. Think advocacy. Tying advocacy and education into a content strategy fueled by SEO can supplement seasonal and ad hoc fundraising campaigns. Missions are the foundation of communities. Nonprofit organizations are foundational in the communities they serve. People join together to support missions, leading to the formation of nonprofit organizations. Businesses and other for-profits are drawn to communities that offer health, education, safety, cultural enjoyment, animal protection, and environmental learning opportunities. Thriving communities grow strong through generosity and collaborative efforts. Fundraisers invite people to contribute to their community at the level they choose and can. We all benefit and are grateful for the generosity in our communities. People can choose to go to a symphony concert or a theater performance. When a family member needs a hospital, it is there. Maybe you want a puppy and go to animal rescue. Think of donors as people who support missions to make communities better. Before the money comes the desire and determination to engage people to create communities by working together. People want to understand the mission's value: its purpose, target audience, importance, and the outcomes of its work. It is the value of the mission. Mission-centered fundraising is a system designed to focus on the value of missions and engage donors in an experience of community service and generosity. Financial contributions represent a way for people to assist and unite in partnership. Missions provide a foundation of support for entrepreneurs and business development that will lift and strengthen a community. Fundraising is not begging for money!! Fundraising is connecting communities to grow stronger. We can choose to change the focus of fundraising from money to community service to reflect its real value. Reflect on your community and identify which missions are fundamental and embody generosity. 12 Steps to Implement a Lasting Stewardship Program 1. Make a firm commitment to the philosophy and practice of stewardship. 2. Add a line item for stewardship activities to your fund development budget. 3. Analyze the donor database and establish giving recognition levels. 4. Identify and honor the donor’s needs, hopes, desires and wishes. 5. Focus on intangible benefits that align with the donor’s values for each giving level. 6. Directly tie stewardship outreach to mission. 7. Create a stewardship plan that includes and integrates the promotion of recognition levels in all donor outreach and communications. 8. Involve donors in the stewardship program with their first gift — the beginning of the donor relationship. 9. Coordinate stewardship with cultivation outreach. 10. Alternate donor messages — after you ask for a contribution, follow up with at least two contacts (or “moves”) without an “ask.” 11. Increase communication to establish and maintain donor relationships — remember that interest leads to involvement and investment. 12. Monitor and review the program by tracking the relationship between stewardship and recognition practices and renewal/ upgrade of gifts, and recalibrate annually. https://lnkd.in/dmUYvm-D

Let's talk... about the Cycle of Cultivation. Here's what you are thinking... the cycle of cultivation- What on earth is left to say about this topic? It has been discussed ad nauseum at conferences and workshops for years. Why should I bother to read this post? The cycle of cultivation has become misunderstood. Too often it is seen through two paradigms. It is seen as a way to (1) deepen a relationship with a donor and (2) to engage with a donor to move them to a larger gift. In its purest form it has one purpose. That is to identify, engage, ask, and steward a donor. One Purpose. When you start using the cycle of cultivation two ways- to both deepen and move donors, your annual giving donors are shortchanged. Maybe you stop identifying new annual giving donors, because your focus is major gifts. Now your pipeline is weak. Maybe you stopped engaging with annual giving donors now you struggle to get people involved with your organization. Maybe, sounds crazy but it happens, you have stopped asking your annual giving donors because it is too expensive to reach them or, and, etc. Now your program is out of balance on a number of philanthropic metrics. Maybe your stopped doing stewardship with your annual donors. The result- these donors don't know the impact they are making.
