#BiodiversityMonth is all about celebrating the spectacular variety of all living things and the habitats they call home. Today we dive into the world of BIAs, aka Biologically Important Areas for Protected Marine Species! 🌊🐋 These areas are like VIP spots for our #marine friends, where they carry out critical life functions such as reproduction, feeding, migration, and resting. Whether it's the mesmerizing dance of migrating whales 🐳 along our coastlines to calving and foraging areas, or the incredible journeys of marine turtles and seabirds to nesting areas on land, BIAs are essential for the survival of these species. BIAs aren't just about understanding and recognising the cool behaviours of our marine life – they're vital for decision-making and conservation planning too. By designating these areas, we can make informed choices about actions that might affect the ability of our protected marine species to flourish. 🐢 We have updated the Protocol for the Designation of Biologically Important Areas for Protected Marine Species (the BIA Protocol) and are reviewing and updating the BIA geospatial data for priority protected marine species. THIS is how I got interested in systems of any type - underwater info-graphics. I absolutely loved them as a kid. Back then, I don't think the term had been coined, but magazines such as National Geographic and World of Knowledge regularly carried similar images to excite interest in science and geography. If provided as an insert - I could never bring myself to cut something out of a book of magazine - the image would inevitably find its way onto my bedroom wall. I have no doubt that without this type of stimulation I would not have studied environmental systems thinking nor joined the RGS. Their impact on my formative mind cannot be overstated and as a visual learner I still like things drawn, mapped out and doodled (much to the consternation/amusement of my team mates, my dodgy doodles can often be found on white boards and flip-charts dotted around the company). Rich pictures, mind-maps, flowcharts, stakeholder maps (and many other examples) are incredibly useful tools to disarm reticence and to convey big ideas in nice simple steps. This particular info graphic from the WWF represents the complex interconnections between organisms that live below (and above) water. In and of value itself, I often find that this kind of diagram is a fine reminder of just how complicated things are and how careful we need to be; whether we are talking about sustainability and biodiversity (as we are here), or as a metaphor for production processes or people management. #sustainability #peoplemanagement #team #nature #biodiversity #systems #systemsthinking #coaching #teaching #infographic

Sharks are in desperate need of journalists who understand the peril they are facing and the importance of their survival to our ocean's ecosystems. We need less sensational stories about shark bites, more on the fact that sharks are one of the most threatened taxa in the WORLD, second only to amphibians. To support this effort to encourage awareness about sharks, we've produced a media guide with facts, data, and terminology compiled by a variety of shark conservation organizations and experts. We need to tell the true story about sharks; that if we don't act now, we could reach a tipping point within the next 10 years. Shark Week 2024 Shark Week 2024 is heavily focused on conservation efforts aimed at raising awareness about the declining shark populations and the critical role sharks play in marine ecosystems. The theme emphasizes the importance of protecting these apex predators, which are essential for maintaining the balance of oceanic environments. One of the central goals of this year's Shark Week is to educate the public about the various threats sharks face, such as overfishing, habitat loss, shark finning, and the impacts of climate change. The program includes scientific research, tagging and tracking of sharks, and tackling the challenges involved in their conservation. For instance, marine biologists highlight how the removal of sharks from ecosystems can lead to negative changes, affecting overall ocean health (Texas A&M Today). Additionally, Shark Week 2024 features special exhibits and interactive events to engage audiences. For example, the American Museum of Natural History in New York has a Sharks exhibition with life-sized models, and the Cox Science Center and Aquarium hosts "Shark Preservation Week," which includes hands-on activities, presentations, and shark feedings (Planet Attractions). Overall, Shark Week 2024 seeks to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation for sharks, encouraging conservation actions to protect these vital creatures and ensure their survival for all future generations.
