Costain Group PLC secures a contract to support the construction of the #SESRO reservoir (South East Strategic Reservoir Option), which will supplies water to customers in #London and #ThamesValley. The company will conduct clay compaction trials this summer to assess ground conditions at the proposed site. The project involves the construction of three test embankments within the reservoir footprint, each around 50 meters long, 20 meters wide, and up to 3 meters high. These trials are scheduled to be completed within six to twelve months. In addition to this project, Costain recently won a design and build contract worth over £5 million to upgrade Thames Water treatment sites in Berkshire and Hampshire. This comes after Thames Water faced a severe debt crisis last year, highlighting the critical need for infrastructure upgrades across the UK. The Office of General Services participated in a recently-announced White House initiative aimed at advancing clean construction materials. New York State is committed to reducing the embodied carbon of the concrete mixes that we procure for our state projects. Embodied carbon represents the emissions that result from the mining, harvesting, processing, manufacturing, transportation, installation, use of products and materials, and disposal of materials. This announcement represents a significant step towards advancing Governor Kathy Hochul’s Executive Order 22, which directed state agencies to reduce embodied carbon in construction materials used in the state’s infrastructure projects. I'm delighted to share an update on the work of the Infrastructure Client Group's Concrete Decarbonisation Accelerator (CDA) 🏗️ The CDA was formed as part of the wider activities of the ICG Infrastructure Carbon Task Group and is supported by WSP and Expedition Engineering Ltd . It springs off the foundations laid by the UK Lower Carbon Concrete Group in its seminal Low Carbon Concrete Routemap https://lnkd.in/eBM4saRE at the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Concrete decarbonisation is a systemic challenge and accelerating the transition must be tackled collaboratively by organisations across the infrastructure and construction industry. The contributing ICG members Anglian Water Services Environment Agency, National Grid National Highways Network Rail Nuclear Decommissioning Authority , Scottish Waterz Sellafield Ltd , Tideway London and Transport for London are enabling the delivery of three workstreams: 🏗️ Collaborative Alignment: harmonise client-led activities and incentivise the supply to accelerate the delivery of concrete decarbonisation through a set of clear commitments. 🛣️ Aggregate Pipeline of Demand: understand ICG-led demand for concrete and provide the supply chain with confidence to invest in volume reduction, low carbon cement replacements and other concrete decarbonisation measures. 🔌 Combined Concrete Decarbonisation Investment: explore the potential for new and existing UK-level mechanisms to fund and support initiatives that deliver faster concrete decarbonisation. The CDA will have immediate impact with short-term practical results and also set the foundations for solutions that may take longer to achieve. The project has committed to #reducing #carbonemissions by at #least50% during both construction and operations, despite the significant number of energy-intensive earthworks involved. Mott MacDonald is responsible for developing a 90-kilometer northern section of the project, with over 21 million cubic meters of material earmarked for removal, which is equivalent to 8,400 Olympic swimming pools. The organization's #geoBIM assessment identified the amount of material designated for removal and its precise location, enabling construction teams to optimize mass haul movements and reuse fill for various project elements being developed.
