As an HR executive, living and working with compassion means prioritizing the well-being of our employees, who in turn dedicate themselves to the care of our residents. Unlike my colleagues and co-workers, whose primary focus is directly on our residents—from custodians and maintenance staff to CNAs, LPNs, RNs—my focus is on the people who make our mission possible: our employees. Compassion in my role involves ensuring that our team members have the support they need to thrive, both professionally and personally. This means crafting and implementing policies and procedures that not only foster a positive work environment but also empower our staff to deliver the best possible care to our residents. By working compassionately, we create a workplace where employees feel valued, supported, and equipped to provide compassionate care. It’s about recognizing the vital role each team member plays and ensuring they have the resources and environment needed to succeed. When we care for our employees with the same dedication they show our residents, we build a stronger, more resilient organization. It’s a cycle of care that starts with us and radiates out to every individual we serve.
Get to know more about the Pavilions each week by learning more about our Mission, Vision, and Core Values! Our mission is to provide accessible, trusted and compassionate care that enhances quality of life for aging adults. One of the ways we do this is with compassion. We strive to deliver care in a most loving and empathetic manner as we would care for our own family. What does living and working with compassion mean to you?

In her insightful article, Maria Popova reflects on John Gardner's profound ideas about self-renewal and the ongoing process of creating meaning in our lives. Gardner, a former U.S. Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare, emphasizes that personal growth is not a finite journey but an endless dialogue between our potentialities and life's challenges. He urges us to regularly rejuvenate our sense of self, likening this process to a gardener tending to a vibrant, evolving garden. For the graduating class of 2024 at Verde Valley School, Gardner's philosophy holds special resonance. As these young individuals step into new phases of their lives, they are reminded that their identities and futures are not predestined. Instead, they are empowered to cultivate their paths through choices and experiences, embracing challenges as opportunities for growth. This mindset aligns with Verde Valley School's emphasis on experiential learning and personal development, encouraging graduates to continuously explore, adapt, and reinvent themselves. Gardner’s notion that life is an "endless process of self-discovery" serves as a poignant reminder for the Verde Valley School community. As graduates embark on their unique journeys, they carry with them the school's spirit of curiosity, resilience, and the belief that they can shape their destinies. They are not merely finding meaning but actively building it, step by step, with each new beginning they encounter. #verdevalleyschool

Parking lot exit sign at Tampa’s Messiah Lutheran Church. As their service ends and individuals leave the church parking lot, a powerful reminder resonates: "You are entering the mission field." This statement carries profound meaning, urging everyone to recognize that their faith extends beyond the walls of the church and into the world around them. Just beyond church parking lots, every day presents an opportunity to embody the values of love, compassion, and service, preached within the church by Messiah’s Pastor, Mark Adrian. That the mission field is not just a distant place; it is the neighborhood, the workplace, and the community where everyday interactions occur. Each person can have influence by spreading kindness and understanding in their daily lives. For individuals leaving Messiah Lutheran’s church parking lot, embracing the idea of entering the mission field can inspire a commitment to service and compassion. It is a reminder that living out one’s faith happens every day, in every interaction. Recognizing the suffering face of Christ in all we encounter. Together, by spreading love and kindness, everyone can help create ‘heaven on earth’ —brighter and more caring neighborhoods, communities, and world. Dorothy Day Tampa – mission field laborers.
