Grenada, Saint Lucia, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines are the three participating member states of the Unleashing the Blue Economy of the Caribbean (UBEC) project—a regional, World Bank-funded project that will focus on strengthening the tourism, fisheries, and waste management sectors to enable greater sustainability both environmentally and financially. UBEC will be implemented under two main components: namely, strengthening governance, policies, and capacity building, and scaling up access to finance and infrastructure investment. The Crown Estate has collaborated with a coalition of experts to produce the first roadmap for scaling up finance flows to projects conserving or restoring the UK’s marine ecosystems. The roadmap emphasises that public finance alone will be insufficient, and private investment is key to scaling the UK’s “high-integrity marine natural capital markets.” Marine environments are an integral facet of the UK economy, contributing an estimated £47 billion and supporting over 500,000 jobs. Investors, however, are deterred by challenges such as a lack of agreed terminology, unclear data on benefits, greenwashing risks, and the under-development of marine financial products.   The roadmap outlines the actions required by 2030 to address challenges associated with mobilising capital into UK marine natural capital markets and how to overcome barriers to investment. These include approving uniform methods for identifying marine and coastal conservation sites, addressing evidence gaps related to the health of ocean habitats, developing UK-wide codes and standardised approaches to improve marine capital market governance, and launching blended finance mechanisms. The Restoration Seed Capital Facility is proud to announce that ECOTIERRA’s Urapi Sustainable Land Use Fund has successfully closed an investment of USD 9.2 million in Honduras, with the Facility’s support. RSCF provided project development support in the form of reimbursable grants, notably to enable Ecotierra to achieve strengthened environmental and social outcomes for this investment. The project implements an innovative model of mixed revenues by rehabilitating old coffee plantations on degraded land, using sustainable agroforestry systems. It will also install new coffee and cocoa production areas under agroforestry, in addition to protecting and restoring forests and establishing beekeeping production. The project was designed and will be implemented in partnership with Société de coopération pour le développement international (SOCODEVI), an NGO. Through its support, RSCF has enabled Ecotierrra to accelerate and expand its efforts in bringing this opportunity to a successful close and contributed to achieving significant E&S outcomes beyond business-as-usual practices.
