[DEI & Leadership] Women on boards are not a "nice to have" anymore This morning, I was delighted to attend a meeting where the inspiring Hedwige Nuyens, chair of European Women on Boards (EWOB) was interviewed. No matter how many times I’ve heard Hedwige speaking, I always learn new things and ways to convey the importance of diversity and inclusion on boards. Three messages stood out 1.- Some people are uncomfortable with quotas, targets, and mandates on boards around protected categories such as gender. However, can we imagine if the EU Commission was headed only by French people? Or Spanish people? Or Polish people? How could that represent the 450 million EU residents? 2.- Boards used to be “a group of friends”. Now boards have been professionalised and as such they must be intentional at implementing diversity and enabling inclusion so the decision-making is enriched by different points of view. 3.- Often women with a wealth of expertise to contribute to boards rule themselves out when offered a board position. If you’re still doubting the value women bring to your boards, here’s some evidence for you “According to Fortune Magazine, female-led companies perform three times better than the S&P 500. And a recent analysis of nearly 11,000 companies globally over the past eight years conducted by the largest bank in Scandinavia found that companies with a woman in the CEO or chairperson role more than doubled the performance of the MSCI World Index. As for board representation, the Women’s Leadership Foundation reports that Fortune 500 companies with sustained representation of three or more women on their boards have significantly greater financial performance than those with no women.” And if you’re a woman hesitating to apply for a board position, below are some pointers -       Be bold -       Know your value and own it -       Embrace ambiguity -       Seek mentors from all genders -       Know and lean into your strengths Even better, you can join the Board Readiness Program from European Women on Boards https://lnkd.in/eMbdke6c Need even more convincing? Joining Amplify Her to distribute one million dollars in its inaugural grant year was a true honor. I became part of a small group of diverse women leaders, evaluating and learning alongside others from NYC. Our mission resonated deeply: to provide one million dollars in impactful funding to organizations centering women and girls. Philanthropy often sets its own rules so our challenge emerged—how do we provide funding in collaboration? How can we ensure that resources are distributed justly and inclusively? Equity in philanthropy isn't merely a goal; it's a dedicated commitment to breaking down barriers. It's about scrutinizing power dynamics, confronting biases, and turning funding into a catalyst for positive change. As donors navigate the assessment landscape using multiple tools, we're witnessing a shift towards more comprehensive program evaluation approaches—going beyond surface-level metrics. Women working in Christian nonprofits, I'm curious to know how relationships have influenced your leadership. Would you share your experience in a 5-10 minute anonymous survey? Women are often encouraged to develop leadership skills through training, but research indicates that the relationships surrounding women are at least as important as (maybe more than!) skill development. The study behind this survey focuses on those relationships that help women launch and sustain their leadership journeys, including the type of support they receive through their relationship networks. Participants must be women 18 years or older who are working for or have recently worked for a Christian nonprofit (i.e. church, denomination, para-church organization, charity) registered in Canada or the USA.
