🎗 Did you know that February 15th is International Childhood Cancer Day (ICCD)? 🎗 The EU-CAYAS-NET coordinator Childhood Cancer International - Europe is responsible for a 3 year campaign recently launched by Childhood Cancer International together with International Society of Paediatric Oncology - SIOP. Each ICCD over the next 3 years we will focus on different themes. This year the ICCD campaign topic is: Unveil the challenges. Take part and co-create a map that will reveal the different challenges and inequalities around the world. Together, let's create a world where every child has the support and resources they need to overcome childhood cancer. The VICS were pleased to see our Optimal Care Summits program in the spotlight last month, at the launch of the Australian Comprehensive Cancer Network (ACCN). The ACCN aims to address disparities in cancer outcomes by connecting #cancer services across the country, fostering collaboration, sharing expertise, and supporting coordinated and equitable access to care.  At the network’s launch in late May, Prof. Grant McArthur AO (CEO of the VCCC Alliance) highlighted successful examples from Victoria of coordinated initiatives to improve quality and equity of #CancerCare. These included the VICS Optimal Care Summits – strategic consultations with multidisciplinary stakeholders from across the state to identify unwarranted variations in cancer care and outcomes, and to prioritise actions to address them. GCPHN has partnered with The Daffodil Centre for The Bowel Cancer Screening Project. We invite health professionals to join us in this initiative, which includes general practice-led quality improvement interventions to increase bowel screening participation. Identify barriers to screening and encourage patients to complete the test, playing a crucial role in saving lives. Evidence shows that recommendations from primary care providers are a key motivator for patients to participate in bowel cancer screening so express your interest today! I couldn’t agree more Jenny about access for rural/regional patients to clinical trials. This is a national issue. Teletrials are one part of the solution. But more needs to be done. This includes allowing patients to claim for travel reimbursement via the various state schemes, if they are traveling to metropolitan centers for a clinical trial. In 2024 this should not still be an issue stopping regional patients from accessing the same standard of care as their metropolitan counterparts. As a Medical Oncologist in regional SA, we are realistic that there are some trials we cannot offer to our patients. There will always be some patients from our clinics who need to travel to Adelaide to access the most appropriate clinical trial or treatment for their cancer. These patients should not be financially worse off, or made to choose whether to pursue treatment or not, based on whether they can afford to travel to and from Adelaide.

On May 29, 2024, the European Cancer Organization (ECO) held a conference in Zagreb and presented its Manifesto and the new European Cancer Report for Croatia. Unfortunately, Croatia is at the top of the EU countries in terms of the incidence rate of malignant diseases. ALK+ UK urges NICE - National Institute for Health and Care Excellence to expedite the approval process for Pfizer’s Lorlatinib as a first-line treatment for advanced ALK-positive lung cancer in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The Crown Study has shown that Lorlatinib offers the longest progression-free survival ever reported for a single-agent targeted treatment in advanced NSCLC, with a remarkable 60% of patients remaining progression-free at five years. While already approved for first-line use in Scotland, it’s time for patients in the rest of the UK to receive the same advanced treatment options. Debra Montague, Chair of ALK Positive Lung Cancer UK, says, “We believe that, in view of the unprecedented results of the Crown Study, Lorlatinib must be made available for newly diagnosed advanced-stage patients in England, Wales, and NI without delay.” The evidence is compelling and calls for immediate action. Following on from yesterday’s post, here's why it's so important to instigate a national bladder cancer audit for the UK.   There is currently simply too much variation in the quality of treatment, with only 12% of hospitals having a TURBT audit programme.   Furthermore, despite a target for all patients to receive a diagnosis within 1 month of referral, half of all patients wait 1.4 months or longer for TURBT, while a quarter of all patients wait 2.4 months or longer.   People with bladder cancer are waiting too long.   “10 years on, bladder cancer care in the UK has not improved. A national QI initiative is needed to shift focus from reporting to improving care.
