📢 📢 📢 Last call to comment on the revision of three Bellville Road Schemes Interested and affected parties have until midnight tonight, Friday 28 June 2024 to comment on the revision of three Bellville road schemes. The City of Cape Town recently undertook a review of the existing transportation planning for the Bellville CBD. This review was initiated by the Bellville Future City Master Plan, and the recently approved Local Spatial Development Framework for the Bellville CBD; and also to address the existing road schemes that are older than 30 years. The proposed northward extension of Robert Sobukwe Road and eastward extension of Tienie Meyer Road are vital to improve mobility and access; and the future regeneration potential of the Bellville CBD. These arterials are also essential to the surrounding areas; required for longer distance urban mobility; supportive of road-based freight and public transport services; and thus, the economic growth of Bellville and surrounds. The proposed revised road schemes are as follows: - Extension, upgrade and realignment of Robert Sobukwe Road and Carl Cronje Drive - Extension of Tienie Meyer Bypass - Extension of Willie Hofmeyer Avenue including the extension of Reed Street It is important to add that road reserves can accommodate several modes of transport – be it additional lanes for private vehicles or for public transport services such as the MyCiTi bus service, or walking and cycle lanes. The proposed road schemes will impact existing access roads and the functioning of current intersections. 6:30 am on a Thursday morning, driving on a suburban road in absolute #gridlock to get to a rapidly filling park and ride, only to take a 1-hour bus ride to work. The thought of going through the same ordeal, if not worse, on the way back in the afternoon is daunting. I’m certain countless other Aucklanders are enduring our #inefficienttransport system and congested roads, all while anxiously observing the alarming number of properties being developed in the same regions without any consideration for the necessary infrastructure improvements. Our #urbanization urgently needs drastic measures to enhance the quality of life for everyone. The hardworking individuals who keep the city running are the ones who suffer the most from our inefficient urban systems and perhaps benefit the least from government incentives, subsidies, and a meaningful tax relief. New settlements and urban extensions need to be better designed, be more sustainable and deliver more liveable outcomes - truly walkable neighbourhoods focussed on local living and sustainable travel. To minimise the need to travel, settlements need a good range of local facilities and for these to be supported (and viable), a settlement needs to be of sufficient scale (in terms of people, residents of workers). Our new evidence led approach to Delivering Sustainably Walkable Neighbourhoods identifies the scale of settlement required, and our WalkFar model forecasts likely levels of walkability for new or existing settlements. The aim of our research is to stimulate an informed discussion amongst leaders, policymakers, planners, developers and designers. Through visionary leadership and practical application, we can tackle the environmental, social and economic challenges facing our world. Cities continue to spend big money on large flashy projects like suburban highways and arenas but neglect the fact that hundreds of smaller projects actually have a much bigger social and financial impact and can cost much less in the aggregate.
