"Even as suburban sprawl, supercommuting rates and housing unaffordability expand the footprint of places like Houston and Phoenix, the focus generally remains firmly on highways and private vehicle travel, with a few light rail lines here and there. Advocacy groups or government agencies have put forward plans to create rapid regional rail-style systems in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, Washington, DC, Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay area. But none have been fully constructed and implemented. For supporters of rapid regional rail, one of the biggest challenges has been explaining these projects to an American public with a siloed view of urban mass transit." #transit #transporation #sustainability

Individual freedoms are directly tied to mobility. There is no way around it. We can provide housing, but if residents can’t get from their housing to work, food, healthcare, social engagements, etc., then what do they have? We really have to adopt a ‘mobility-first’ mentality in development. #transitisessential
"We need to create the virtuous cycle where good public transit has a centralizing effect on where people invest in real estate and create new jobs. And because we've had decades of investment skewed towards roads and highways, that's sometimes a losing battle in these midsize cities." https://lnkd.in/e3sEy-G2

From western Europe to the Middle East to east Asia, diverse countries are investing in “rapid regional rail” systems that allow residents to commute across metro areas at high speeds. So far, the US has been slow to get on board the trend. Advocacy groups or government agencies have put forward plans to create rapid regional rail-style systems in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, Washington, DC, Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay area. But none have been fully constructed and implemented. 🚗 More Roads ≠ Less Traffic: The Paradox of Induced Demand We've all been there: stuck in traffic, wishing for wider roads. But what if I told you that building more roads often leads to... more traffic? 🤯 It's a phenomenon called "Induced Demand" Here's the scoop: • New roads → More people drive • More drivers → Same (or worse) congestion • Result? We're back where we started This isn't just theory—it's backed by decades of urban planning studies. So, what's the solution? 🚊 Invest in public transit 🚶♂️ Promote walkable communities 🚲 Encourage cycling infrastructure These alternatives can help us manage traffic more sustainably and create more livable cities. What do you think? Have you seen induced demand in action in your area? Let's discuss in the comments! #UrbanPlanning #Transportation #InducedDemand #SustainableCities #SustainableTransportation #PublicTransit #TrafficManagement #InducedDemand ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

📢 📢 📢 Last call to comment on the revision of three Bellville Road Schemes Interested and affected parties have until midnight tonight, Friday 28 June 2024 to comment on the revision of three Bellville road schemes. The City of Cape Town recently undertook a review of the existing transportation planning for the Bellville CBD. This review was initiated by the Bellville Future City Master Plan, and the recently approved Local Spatial Development Framework for the Bellville CBD; and also to address the existing road schemes that are older than 30 years. The proposed northward extension of Robert Sobukwe Road and eastward extension of Tienie Meyer Road are vital to improve mobility and access; and the future regeneration potential of the Bellville CBD. These arterials are also essential to the surrounding areas; required for longer distance urban mobility; supportive of road-based freight and public transport services; and thus, the economic growth of Bellville and surrounds. The proposed revised road schemes are as follows: - Extension, upgrade and realignment of Robert Sobukwe Road and Carl Cronje Drive - Extension of Tienie Meyer Bypass - Extension of Willie Hofmeyer Avenue including the extension of Reed Street It is important to add that road reserves can accommodate several modes of transport – be it additional lanes for private vehicles or for public transport services such as the MyCiTi bus service, or walking and cycle lanes. The proposed road schemes will impact existing access roads and the functioning of current intersections. More details are available on the City’s Have-Your-Say page: https://lnkd.in/drTgKR35 Comments, recommendations or inputs can be submitted by: - Email: Bellville.RoadSchemes@capetown.gov.za (Quote reference: 110232416) - Online: Submit your comments digitally by visiting: https://lnkd.in/drTgKR35 Written submissions - Sub Council 6 Office, Bellville Civic Centre, Voortrekker Road, Bellville - Library: Bellville Public Library, Carl Van Aswegen Street, Bellville, Cape Town, 7530 #UrbanMobility #UrbanMobilityCT #CityOfCapeTown #CapeTown

IN THE MEDIA 📰📺📲 | "Multi-billion-dollar transport projects create headlines, and politicians love to bask in the glow of a successfully completed project such as Sydney’s new Metro," writes Kurt Iveson, Professor of Urban Geography, University of Sydney. "In stark contrast with the shiny new Metro stations, the bus network is suffering from under-investment." "Our survey of thousands of suburban bus stops, conducted with advocacy group Sweltering Cities, found many lack shelter, seating, signage and even stable surfaces..."
