In order to see electric vehicle adoption accelerate, we need a widespread, equitable, and accessible charging infrastructure network! Lacey Shaver, Joseph Womble, Katrina McLaughlin and I recently led a second cohort of local governments around this topic as part of U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Clean Energy to Communities program in partnership with National Renewable Energy Laboratory. We learned a lot throughout the process, and we're hopeful those learnings can be applicable to other local governments and transportation planners working on decarbonization. As more electric vehicles get on the road, cities and counties are considering how to equitably build out the public charging infrastructure needed to power such vehicles. The third quarter 2023 report on EV charging infrastructure trends from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory identifies some of the current charging disparities....

PV + EV = ⚡ The colocated solar carport + EV charging trend is only starting. While some may discredit it as another greenwashing initiative ("the solar panels don't directly power the EV chargers anyway"), we see it more as the latest illustration of clean electricity generation and consumption at the grid edge. As usually in these emerging trends (otherwise we wouldn't have a job), business models are complex and depend highly on market structure, site configuration, and traffic / vehicle duty cycle. Great article about Paired Power by Emily Newton published in EEPower featuring the immense value of PairTree EV charging infrastructure. A snippet from the piece: "Numerous arguments surrounding building up charging infrastructure revolve around the antiquated grid’s ability to sustain a predominantly electrified population. PairTree eliminates this argument by installing an awning-like solar canopy above chargers, which uses renewable power from the sun to fuel the unit. Exciting news from Renewable Properties! 🌞 They've launched a new electric vehicle (EV) fleet charging service for medium- and heavy-duty truck and bus fleets in California. Leveraging their expertise in solar development and electrical infrastructure, Renewable Properties offers a turnkey charging solution for companies transitioning to electric power. Teaming up with Black & Veatch, they're designing the first EV charging station in Vacaville, CA, with plans to deploy more across the West Coast. Charging at their depots will operate under a charging-as-a-service agreement, with no upfront costs for fleet owners.
