💡 Did you know that 99% of our calories come from the soil? Whether directly from plants or indirectly through animals that feed on plants, we would not exist without calories originating from the soil. 🥪 As one of our partners, Harper Adams University is bringing attention to this crucial fact. In #SOB4ES, they lead the work package aimed at developing a harmonised and cost-effective framework for better ecosystem assessment and land management through the integration of soil biodiversity. 'Other Neutral Grassland' doesn't have to be boring 😴 Love this blog from Richard Gowing. It distills a lot of the conversations we've had over the past couple of years at Environment Bank. We are going to end up with large amounts of 'other neutral grassland' on our BNG habitat bank sites, but what that looks like is going to vary dramatically from site to site. From shallow wet scrapes to created banks 🦗 these are all additional extras not immediately obvious on a 2d map. I also agree completely on the condition assessment needing a rethink to look beyond botanical indicators. 🌾🌼 We are actually aiming for areas of 'poor' condition grassland on some sites that use truer rewilding approaches so we dont have to pull thistles and docks (which are great for invertebrates as the blog says). The mosaic point is a great one too, could a mosaic multiplier work in future? 🤔
