In the U.S., the National Women’s History Alliance chooses its own theme for Women's History Month each year. This year’s theme is centered on “Women who advocate for equity, diversity, and inclusion.” “During 2024, we recognize the example of women who are committed to embracing everyone and excluding no one in our common quest for freedom and opportunity. Last week I spoke at a Women in STEM fundraiser. At its heart, it was about standing up for all who are disenfranchised, why science literacy is so important, and finding your voice through it all. It was incredible to see the talented young audience come to life with questions, opinions, and hear their stories about navigating STEM. Among our conclusions were the following: Trust yourself. That hunch that keeps tapping you on the shoulder - it’s usually right. Don't give up, the world really does need you. We certainly have a bright future with these people around!

I have always had a profound interest in equity and social justice. Raised by activists who instilled in me the belief in equality, I never let my gender define my capabilities. Embracing diversity, I learned to value individuals for who they are without prejudice towards gender, race, ethnicity, religion, or other factors. In higher education, we continue to focus fundraising efforts on males. Let's pause and think about the impact of women in philanthropy. This year's theme for Women’s History Month is "Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion."    Women have always been at the forefront of the fight for equity, diversity, and inclusion. From the suffragettes to the civil rights activists to the women who are leading the fight for gender equality today, women have been the ones who have pushed our society forward.   This Women's History Month, I want to take a moment to inspire you to celebrate the women who are working to make our world a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive place. These women are the ones who are fighting for equal pay, equal opportunity, and equal representation for all women. They are the ones who are working to break down the barriers that have held women back for so long.    I am proud to work for a company that is committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion. Link Logistics is a leader in this area, and I am grateful for the opportunity to work with such talented and dedicated women.   Here are a couple of ways that Link is leading the way in DEI: We have a Women's Leadership Council, Ascend, which is a group of senior women who are committed to advancing the careers of women at the company. What are most companies missing in creating a more diverse workplace? Simply put - education. Organizations, large and small, have set goals to create a more diverse and inclusive workplace - hiring underrepresented minorities, creating safer work environments, mentorship programs, and so on. And yet - black individuals in the US represent about 12% of the general workforce, yet only 8% of the technology workforce - that's a 30% under representation. With the latino population it's even worse - they make up 17% of the general workforce, but are employed by in only 8% of the tech jobs - nearly 50% under representation. No surprise that according to the World Economic Forum the US ranks 53rd in fair wage distribution, well below most of the developed economies. That's no surprise, as the US ranks 40th in education access. If tech companies truly want to create diverse workplaces they mustn't solely focus on hiring diversity from their application pool. Many of these minorities simply don't have access to sufficient education earlier in life to even make it into the pool to be considered. Companies must embrace longer term investments in all stages of education, driving a more diverse candidate pool in the future. Women’s possibilities and potential have been restricted by historical and cultural conventions that have frequently placed them in subordinate situations, despite their continuing accomplishments witnessed in society. Acknowledging women's rights is recognizing that all people, regardless of gender, should have equal access to opportunities for employment, education, and personal development. By recognizing the shortcomings of our own narratives when it comes to women’s rights, we can take the first steps towards contributing to equality.
