When Andrew Stafford from Denver is behind the bar, he has one mission: finding a favorite beer for every guest. “When someone says they don’t like beer, I make it a point to show them that they just haven’t had a beer (or cider or gluten-free option) they like yet.” Andrew knows from experience. Here’s a fun fact for you…he wasn’t a beer drinker until adulthood. Now, he’s been on a “decade-long tour of beer styles…” It’s this knowledge that gives Andrew the confidence that he can find a beer for every guest. “It’s become my biggest hobby, and I love to share what I’ve learned with others.”

DID YOU KNOW (2for1) How To Store Your OPEN Bottles of Whiskey If you like to sample different types of whiskies and whiskey cocktails, you will have multiple bottles open at a time. Having too many bottles open is like starting several books at one time never getting beyond the first chapter on any of them. Whisky oxidizes in an open bottle and will gradually dull its taste, but you do not have to finish a bottle in one night or weekend. You have a few months to ensure that you are enjoying it at its peak. If you can try to discipline yourself and keep open only the number of bottles you can finish within a four-month period to ensure you are getting the freshest pours. You should limit the oxygen's Impact, once you open a bottle, oxygen is already doing its work. If you're planning to work through the bottle quickly, simply replace the cork. For bottles you aren't going to finish within a few months, consider alternate strategies. Decanting the whisky into small sample bottles or pumping in inert gas between tastings. Basics Whiskey Storage (UNOPENED BOTTLES/COLLECTING) Mr. Edwards, I looked for this info after our last conversation. I hope it helps. Unlike wine, storing whisky is easy and doesn't require and does not require equipment. Whisky is more robust than wine and will not ripen or spoil within a sealed bottle. Store your bottles upright, never on their side. This is to protect the cork. If the cork has continued contact with the high strength alcohol this causes the cork to degrade and will give an unpleasant flavor to the whisky. Keep your whiskies from direct sunlight and extremely high temperature, exposing your whisky to extreme heat can lead to significant volume loss. Keeping your whiskey in an outside building could increase you chances of loss or damage. 1. The Difference Between Whiskey, Bourbon, Scotch and Rye In the United States and Ireland, whiskey is spelled “whiskey” and in Scotland, Canada, and Japan, it’s spelled “whisky.” Bourbon (Jim Beam), Tennessee whiskey (Jack Daniel’s), Irish whiskey (Jameson), rye (Knob Creek), and scotch (Johnnie Walkers). What makes them similar they are all whiskeys. -Tennessee whiskey can only be made and aged in Tennessee, the grain mixture is at least 51% corn aged in new charred oak barrels and filtered through a bed of sugar maple charcoal. -Irish whiskey can only be made in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The four categories are blended, single malt, single grain and pot still. Aged for at least 3 years in a wooden cask. -Bourbon can only be made in the United States, the grain mixture is at least 51% corn, and aged in a new charred oak barrel. -Scotch can only be made 100% in Scotland, made from malted barley and aged in oak casks for no less than three years. -Rye mixture is at least 51% rye, aged in new charred oak barrels Flavor-wise, Scotch is smoky, bourbon is sweet, and rye is more astringent than the two others, making it particularly suitable to cocktails. This is the best book on agave spirit I have read in a long time! For all of you wine and spirits professionals, get yourself a copy!
EDIT: Corrected link in comments below. Are you a nerd? Are you a newbie? Either way, "A Field Guide to Tequila" is for you, according to Matt Kettman of the Santa Barbara Independent. "Szczech’s A Field Guide to Tequila should be required reading for all of those California agave enthusiasts, not to mention anyone else who enjoys sipping agave spirits, meeting generational farmers and distillers, or just learning about a legendary plant and process in this fascinating part of the planet." Thanks for the chat, Matt!

DID YOU KNOW FASCINATING FACTS ABOUT WHISKEY 1. Whiskey means “water of life”. 2. An incredible one billion bottles of whiskey are produced in Scotland every year, but 90% of it is exported. Scotland has over 120 distilleries. Most of them focus on a single brand of production, or number of brands. They have more than 5,000 versions of single malt whiskies. The annual collective amount produced from the country is over one billion bottles a year, and yet over 90% is exported. 3. Whiskey starts out by being Beer. 4. What is “Angels Share” When whiskey is aged for a long time in oak barrels a certain volume evaporates through the porous wood during that period. This is called “Angel’s Share”. A standard barrel could lose up to 40% of the initial volume placed in it by the time the whiskey is ready for bottling. This increases the price since there is less whiskey per barrel available for sale. 5. Alabama’s Official State Beverage is Whiskey 6. July 27 is National Scotch Day Every year, whiskey from Scotland is celebrated all over the world, National Scotch Day. Get a few different brands, be sure to include your favorite, invite family and friends, purchase a few cigars and have a whiskey flight. https://lnkd.in/dRbYnkrh #veteranE8retired #hartzogandsonswhiskeyhouse #1WhiskeyloungeNC
