Environmental Policy Attaché (Advisor) to the Permanent Delegation of Italy to the International Organisations in Paris
The World Trade Organization binding multilateral Agreement on #Fisheries #Subsidies is the second multilateral agreement ever reached at the WTO and the first one with environmental sustainability at its core. By, among other measures, prohibiting subsidies to fishing on #overfished stocks and on the unregulated high seas - thereby providing protection where fisheries management measures cannot be enforced - the Agreement will help reversing the devastating decline in fish stocks. In June 2023 the European Union joined the first WTO members, including the United States and Canada, formally accepting the Agreement.

Climate change, overfishing: Pacific tuna faces ‘unprecedented challenges’ The annual regional fisheries meeting to discuss and address crucial matters concerning tuna fisheries and the marine ecosystems they inhabit began Wednesday with a traditional welcome and official opening ceremony at the National Auditorium. Cook Islands, like many Pacific Island nations, relies heavily on fisheries as a cornerstone of its economy and a vital source of nutrition, said Deputy Prime Minister Robert Tapaitau at the opening of the 20th Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC20). “But as the world’s largest tuna fishery, producing almost 3 million metric tons, and valued at $6 billion dollars, we also feed and employ billions of other people around the world,” Tapaitau said.
