Yesterday marked a significant milestone as we celebrate the graduation of 23 remarkable men from our program at Trousdale. This event goes beyond individual achievements; it represents our collective commitment to fostering a society that sees value and potential in every person. By supporting these men, we champion the idea that everyone deserves a chance to rewrite their story and contribute meaningfully to our community. Our program is designed to educate and empower, with a curriculum developed by those who understand the journey best—returned citizens themselves. This approach ensures that we address our participants' real challenges and barriers, paving the way for true transformation. If you believe in the power of redemption and the importance of second chances, I encourage you to get involved. Whether by volunteering, offering employment opportunities to returning citizens, or engaging with our RESET training to create more inclusive workplaces, your support can catalyze significant change. Together, we can help shape a community—and ultimately a society—where everyone is afforded the dignity and opportunity to thrive. Join us in this crucial mission. Be sure to follow The DREAM Initiative for updates and more information. #Leadership #Impact #SecondChances #DREAMInitiative

"As Chief Inclusion Officer, I continue to challenge myself to take a moment and listen – listen to the needs of our communities and beyond. How can we do more to lift up others and help our Company support organizations that do the same?" Check out this great article by Dow's Chief Inclusion Officer Alveda J. Williams, Ph.D. and learn more about some examples of how we are working to help partners and programs like OneTen, Last Mile Education Fund and Dow Leadership and Treasure Academies that are developing talent in communities where there is great need.

How Compassionate Leadership and Philanthropy Can Alleviate Loneliness and Propel Us Towards a Double Bottom Line In the words of Robert F Kennedy “We can do better as a nation and we can do better with our relationships with others”. With those words in mind, it is my belief each of us own a piece of the solution toward the goal of reducing the amount of people who are feeling lonely – isolated – a loss sense of relevancy. After-hours Reflection 💭 Sometimes, the growth opportunities you're looking for don't come in a corner office. They come in a big ol' binder. 📓 Like the one I use for the YMCA on Granby, where I volunteer as a board member. It keeps all my agendas and notes, bylaws and brochures. I bring it to meetings like the one we had tonight, full of... Energy and ideas Collaboration and camaraderie Action and reflection I used to think my career journey was the only place to make an impact, to leverage my skills, and to grow. I was wrong. #purpose #growth #development #service #leadership #community #volunteer

Partnerships are key!
"Leadership is not about being in charge. It's about taking care of those in your charge." The Louisville Urban League is thankful for partnerships like that of Kamari Wooten, Executive Director of Chestnut Street YMCA of Greater Louisville, pictured with President Lyndon Pryor.

A couple of weeks ago I had the honour of being invested as an Officer of the Order of St John. I was recognised for this honour for my volunteer work at Hato Hone St John locally with the Nelson-Tasman Bays Area Committee, and regionally with the South Island Region Trust Board. The Order of St John is an Order of Chivalry and is an independent part of the New Zealand Royal Honours system. Honours are conferred by the Order with the sanction of King Charles III as Sovereign Head of the Order. To be admitted or promoted within the Order members must show a remarkable dedication to St John and the work of the Order. It has been quite overwhelming, and I’ve had a range of emotions to process as I’ve taken it all in. I have moved through embarrassment, an ‘imposter’ feeling and eventually pride. Through all this stuff swimming around in my head, I keep coming back to focussing on the ‘why’ I volunteer and contribute to such an amazing organisation – here are some of the reasons: PEOPLE - I get to interact with like-minded, passionate and community focused individuals. Genuine people, many of whom have become lifelong friends. Amazing people from a variety of backgrounds, who ordinarily I wouldn’t cross paths with. WELLBEING – Sharing my skills, knowledge and time is a real boost for my confidence, resilience and sometimes pushes me outside my comfort zone. I feel connected and have a strong sense of purpose in the work we do. UNDERSTANDING – I’ve gained a much deeper understanding of the needs and challenges faced by our communities and a far more empathetic view of the world around me. My perceptions are challenged, and I’ve realised some unconscious bias, I never knew I had sitting there! So, why am I sharing this? To encourage you to volunteer your time, knowledge, and experience to the vast number of organisations and community groups out there – plenty are looking for help and support, from ordinary everyday people like you. I know time is precious, but maybe consider sharing it with an organisation like Hato Hone St John – you never know where it might take you. My experience volunteering has genuinely been one of getting equally, if not more back than I put in. Get out there and do it! #stjohn #volunteer #community

Beth Chandler has made an indelible mark on our city. I’ve had the honor of serving on the Board of YW Boston since 2018. That was the year that Beth began her leadership as President & CEO of this crucial Boston organization. In 2020, I became the Board Chair, which gave me the opportunity to work more closely with Beth. Beth is stepping down this summer, after 12 years with YW Boston and six as its head. With her guidance and advocacy, YW Boston has made Boston a more equitable place for the benefit of all residents, in particular women of color. Beth stewarded the non-profit through historic challenges, from a complex strategic planning process to navigating the pandemic to selling the landmark Back Bay building. She also seeded the growth of diversity and inclusion throughout our institutions. I’ve learned a lot from Beth over the years. From her strength—she’s very direct, and stands up for what she believes to be right. From her willingness to listen to different opinions and perspectives, and change her mind. And I particularly appreciate her combination of vision and strategy. Anyone who wants to make transformative change in their organizations can learn lessons from her tenure. When she led us in a deep probe into the meaning of our mission, she helped us focus on who our beneficiaries really are: not just the clients we consulted or the participants in the program, but the colleagues and clients of those people. She saw how YW Boston was a catalyst, inspiring and supporting people to be change agents in their own organizations. I vividly remember when the Board was discussing a tough decision. We’d been losing money on a volunteer-facilitated service. She wanted to hire staff to deliver it more effectively and charge a fee. We were anxious about the risk of hiring people with a budget deficit. Beth presented the alternatives clearly: we could gradually bleed out over time, or we could take this risk and build toward a sustainable model. She recognized it was the time for bold moves. We agreed. And when the demand for DEI services exploded, we had the people we needed and we were well positioned to provide the services. She also knew that boldness isn’t always about expansion. When I joined the board, YW Boston had 10 or 12 programs—we were spread a little thin. Beth and the leadership team honed the portfolio basically to three: Inclusion Boston, LeadBoston, and FYRE. These, along with advocacy campaigns like parity on boards and United Against Racism, share a theory of change: they build a group of people who have a real deep understanding of equity and inclusion, so that they can go back to their organizations and create change. That vision has helped create a better climate for everyone. I give Beth my gratitude and my personal admiration, for all that she’s done—for YW Boston, for so many organizations that have worked with us, and for the City of Boston. Thank you, Beth. https://wix.to/Rmy6E0N
Thank You, Beth Chandler
