Sobering article about the #teacher shortage in special education. The article states that data from the U.S. Department of Education indicates that 42 states and #Washington, D.C. have fewer special education #teachers than schools need. That’s every state except #Arkansas, #California, #Louisiana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, #Oklahoma, #Oregon and #Utah. Enrollment in special education nationwide has increased by 800,000 in the last 10 years, increasing demand for special educators. Meanwhile, millions of teachers are expected to retire in the next decade. #NewHampshire #NorthDakota #SpecialEducation

The teacher shortage is a national problem and has never been worse than this year. This article shows the local impact on special education students as 48 of Montgomery County Public Schools' current 113 vacancies are in special education. Parents should know that they are entitled to compensatory education services, when their children miss special education service and there is an impact from that missed time. Check out my article on why more progressives like me ought to support community based and led charter schools as one of the tools to make public education work for all students and families. Any model of public education that works needs to be supported, charter, traditional district, magnet, community, renaissance, lab, intradistrict and interdistrict choice, etc. We are losing another generation of students arguing about and with adult special interests and our children don't have the luxury to wait decade after decade for proposed change that never happens or never addresses the root causes of systematic failure for the masses of students, especially Black, Brown and working class. #EdWoke https://lnkd.in/gTh2YzSG

The Bay Area is at the forefront of tackling a national crisis: a severe shortage of teachers. As stated by The Mercury News, "nearly 40% of schools in California had teaching vacancies they found either very difficult or impossible to fill, according to the Learning Policy Institute, a research organization that focuses on K-12 education. That, of course, trickled down to the need for — and the lack of — substitute teachers, which classrooms are still feeling today." 📉 Alameda County's Pipeline to Increase Community Teachers (PICT) program is designed to provide school districts with qualified substitutes who are familiar with the community in which they work. One of the goals of this program is to draw more people into the world of teaching. 📚 That's why I'm proud to announce that I've applied to the program in hopes to spend more time in the classroom while supporting my community. 🙌 If you're in the Bay Area and interested in teaching, consider applying here: https://lnkd.in/gNuH5Eu2 Let's make a difference, one classroom at a time 🍎. #TeacherShortage #EducationReform #ActNow

This week, southern leaders continue to navigate some of the major challenges in education, including the need to increase educator retention and for more investments in high-quality early learning. In Missouri, more than 500 school districts are using state grant funding for educator retention, in addition to new funding that will increase educator salaries below $38,000. Meanwhile, Texas educators and advocates await clarity on whether state leaders will still act to increase educator salaries. The Center for American Progress’s new analysis shows that unequal access and underfunding hinder efforts to address inequities in early care, despite federal programs and policies, and a new study from Oklahoma indicates that high-quality early care and learning programs can impact students if they are enrolled by early toddlerhood.
