I told a class of eighth graders yesterday when I knew recruiting was the profession for me... What a privilege it was to speak again at the Career Day at Mendez Fundamental Intermediate School. It was my third time speaking to a few eighth-grade classes about what a career in recruiting looks like. The kids were great! A little shy but attentive and engaged. They asked great questions. I was neither the best nor the most engaged student and I give back by attending these Career Days so that maybe I can reach a kid like me at that age. Here is what I told the kids about how I knew recruiting was for me: Three months into my career my first-ever placement called me one evening to thank me for helping him get a new job. "You changed my life," he told me. And I've been hooked on recruiting ever since. Working with difficult customers, or alongside colleagues who have different work ethics can be a great skill-builder! 💼 Experience an industry or job that may inform a future career decision. A simple summer job may be either a stepping stone into a career path or the certainty your student needs to never do that job again. This is the program I wish I would have had access to in my 20’s. I really struggled to find a career track that used my strengths toward something I care about. But not because those opportunities were hard to find. Rather, I didn’t believe I was allowed to want work that felt good. You’d be crazy not to take that job. That’s what everyone told me after I landed a coveted summer associate job. A job that, if you played your cards right, would land you a first year associate position. Making a LOT of money. I had to agree. I would be crazy to turn the summer associate job down. And even crazier if I later turned down the first year associate position… I thought about it, talked it over with my family and friends, and realized I couldn’t find a reason not to take this job. And yet… Something inside me KNEW this wasn’t the job for me. 🍿 SPOILER ALERT - I said yes to the summer associate job. And to the first year associate job. And I shoved that nagging feeling deep into the recesses of my mind. Looking back, I can see what happened here. I relied on logic and facts to point me towards the best career choice for me. Nothing wrong with that - in theory. But when intuition tried to tell me something about myself that no amount of logic could, I ignored it. And while I have no regrets in choosing that first job. I can’t help but wonder how different my career path could have been, Had I listened to my intuition in that moment.
