💬 "In 1996, an organization came in and constructed a shallow well, but we never took care of it or cleaned it. So we continued to have waterborne disease and Malaria because we didn't know how to use it. But with the VSLA groups, we were told about the importance of protecting our shallow wells and treating them well. The diseases have been reduced, " Ann Kobusoro, a VSLA member in Kabarole, Uganda. 🤝🏽 Ann speaks about how Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs; self-governed investment groups that follow strong accountability practices) have benefited the community. 🔖 How can this model help ensure improved long-term water point functionality: https://ow.ly/gCka50Qrh9a Conrad N. Around 733 million people faced hunger in 2023, equivalent to one in eleven people globally and one in five in Africa, according to the latest State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (#SOFI) report published today by five United Nations specialized agencies. The annual report, launched this year in the context of the G20 Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty Task Force Ministerial Meeting in Brazil, warns that the world is falling significantly short of achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2, Zero Hunger, by 2030. The report shows that the world has been set back 15 years, with levels of undernourishment comparable to those in 2008-2009. Despite some progress in specific areas such as stunting and exclusive breastfeeding, an alarming number of people continue to face food insecurity and malnutrition as global hunger levels have plateaued for three consecutive years, with between 713 and 757 million people undernourished in 2023—approximately 152 million more than in 2019 when considering the mid-range (733 million). Regional trends vary significantly: the percentage of the population facing hunger continues to rise in Africa (20.4 percent), remains stable in Asia (8.1 percent)—though still representing a significant challenge as the region is home to more than half of those facing hunger worldwide —and shows progress in Latin America (6.2 percent). From 2022 to 2023, hunger increased in Western Asia, the Caribbean, and most African subregions. If current trends continue, about 582 million people will be chronically undernourished in 2030, half of them in Africa, warn the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD)), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the UN World Food Programme (World Food Programme), and the World Health Organization (WHO). This projection closely resembles the levels seen in 2015 when the Sustainable Development Goals were adopted, marking a concerning stagnation in progress.

Follow me to stay updated on equitable disaster recovery, principled humanitarian action, nonprofit leadership in a remote world and other musings on disaster philanthropy and beyond.
The 2024 United Nations State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report delves into the pressing issues of growing food insecurity and #malnutrition, providing a comprehensive analysis of the current global food security landscape and the necessary actions to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. “The bottom line is that we are still far off-track towards the goal of ridding the world of hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition by 2030,” said Maximo Torero of FAO. At the Center for Disaster Philanthropy (CDP), we mobilize philanthropy to strengthen the ability of all communities to withstand disasters and recover equitably when they occur. This report underscores the importance of targeted financing and strategic interventions to combat food insecurity and malnutrition, especially in regions hardest hit by conflict, climate extremes and economic downturns. CDP’s Global Hunger Crisis Fund supports vulnerable, marginalized and at-risk groups to prevent and address extreme hunger and malnutrition and their urgent, life-threatening impacts. Air pollution is a major health risk, even more significant than malaria, HIV/AIDS, and transportation injuries combined. Many countries, especially those highly polluted, do not provide open air quality data to their citizens. To address this, the EPIC Air Quality Fund, supported by a $1.5 million gift from Open Philanthropy, will help local groups install air quality monitors and share data with the public. The Fund aims to provide this data, helping people understand and address the problem. Historically, countries like Japan, the US, and China improved air quality when the public demanded change, driven by data. Currently, Asia, Africa, and Latin America suffer the most from air pollution but receive very little funding to combat it. In contrast, Europe and North America, which contribute less to pollution, receive most of the funding. The EPIC Air Quality Fund aims to break this cycle by supporting local efforts to generate and share air quality data. The goal is to provide data access to 1 billion people by 2030, enabling communities to breathe cleaner air and live healthier lives. The Fund will support these efforts long-term and require that data be shared openly on platforms like the non-profit OpenAQ. The Fund was piloted with $140,000 from Open Philanthropy and AWS, investing in local groups in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia, and Argentina. The Fund now invites applications from groups in need of air quality monitors, with a deadline of September 10, 2024. The EPIC Clean Air Program aims to provide information on air quality and its health impacts globally, motivating action and guiding efficient policies. This includes the Air Quality Life Index (AQLI) and pollution trading markets in Indian cities. #Airpollution #healthrisk #airquality

As we observe World Nutrition Week, Lattice with support from The Rockefeller Foundation is at the forefront of the movement for "Nutritious Diets for Everyone." By integrating Omena—an affordable, nutrient-dense protein—into school meals, we have positively impacted over 19,000 learners across Kenya.
