SPEAKER CONNECTIONS NEEDED Boston While Black is hosting a week of events on Martha's Vineyard this summer (Aug 20th - 24th) and we need some dynamic additional speaker recommendations. One of our flagship events will be a forum at Union Chapel as part of the Charles Ogletree Public Forum series. Our forum will be a discussion on what makes a city the best place for Black people to live and work. We are looking for: - someone in the corporate space (tech, finance, higher ed, sports, etc) who understands the ROI for companies to invest in cities - a government leader who leads work around creating communities where Black people are thriving - someone well-known who does work around investing in cities/Black well-being In addition, we will be hosting a reception connecting leaders from across the country to explore the complex funding dynamics shaping Black cities and communities and who are interested in helping to scale the mission of Boston While Black. What is being done to address the overwhelming sense of purposelessness? I had an incredible conversation with Jordan Mayer from Made4More, Inc today about helping high school students explore their God-given purpose through mentorship based business internships (and so much more). Jordan paints a compelling picture for a future that integrates multi-generational church bodies by providing pathways for young to be mentored by older church members in a Christian work environment. The average person spends most of their waking life at work. It's time for the church to better support a Christ-centric purpose for each member form a young age - no matter if that is purpose filled employment, business ownership, or non-profit work. Building bridges for lower socioeconomic backgrounds Tonight I will be joining a panel at a BYP Network in Leeds discussing Goal setting and career growth strategies with a focus on Black young professionals. With Leeds continuing to grow economically and the divide widening how can we enable people from lower socioeconomic backgrounds into positions of affluence. 1. Strengths: Understanding and promoting some of the unique strengths of coming from these environments. 2. Education: Supporting teachers to understand nuances, coaching and implementing restorative practices. 3. Removing career barriers: Moving to strength based interviews and diversifying access to entry and applications. 4. Enabling programmes: To support career development and promoting alternate career paths. 5. Community & collaboration: Supporting community programmes with funding as well as private sector and leaders involvement. 6. Promotion and recognition: Promoting those who have come from diverse backgrounds and creating a link to the community to inspire the next generation. As we all know, the effect of redlining still exists, and it’s still affecting communities of color within the Boston area. Redlining is a policy enforced by banks and government agencies that deny loans, mortgages, and other financial services to people living in predominantly Black, Hispanic, and Indigenous neighborhoods. Although discriminatory practices such as these were banned over 50 years ago, minorities are still dealing with the consequences of redlining and the perpetuated cycles of inequality holding back the progress of these vibrant communities. As we work towards a more equitable and just future, it is crucial to acknowledge and address the lingering effects of redlining in Boston and to ensure genuine inclusive growth and prosperity for all.
