The New Warehouse Weekly Vol 42

It's been quite the conference season for me and I'm finally back home for awhile until the next one. I love to get out and meet people in the industry and learn from those presenting but it's also good to be home for a bit.

One thing that I have been asked probably a hundred times in the past 6 weeks while meeting new people at conferences and connecting virtually is, how the heck did I start a podcast about warehousing and why. Haha

I have to admit it is a little crazy to have a podcast about warehousing, even more so when I started it back in 2019 but I love it. So for those that have not heard the story, I thought I might give a little refresher here this week.

My career background has been in warehousing for 13 years now but it definitely was not my career plan or even what I went to school for. When I was young I wanted to be a chef and at school I went for a major in Entrepreneurial Studies with minors in Event Planning and Arts Administration so pretty far off from supply chain.

However, I found myself in a temporary position as an Inventory Control Specialist after college and quickly took on a full time role as the Inventory Control Analyst. While not necessarily what I thought I would do, I started to enjoy it and thought it could be a good career. As I started to embrace it more mentally, I wanted to learn more which lead me to looking for online materials to learn from on warehousing which were few and far between. Nothing I found really grabbed my attention as a younger person at the time to learn from in short bursts.

Meanwhile, I had done some real estate work which lead me to doing some blogging on real estate and also a radio show at my alma mater's radio station on the side. With this experience I thought I would start a warehouse blog. However, it was much too time consuming while I was in the process of a large scale project opening a new warehouse (coincidentally) for the company I was working for at the time. That idea got put on the back burner for a bit and then someone suggested I do a podcast instead.

Before I recorded my first podcast, I had never listened to a podcast before but it sounded similar to the radio show I did previously so I thought I would give it a shot. I got my microphone and figured out how to record which brought to life The New Warehouse and the first episode releasing in March of 2019.

Now with 5 years of podcasting in the books and almost 500 episode out, I can say that I definitely got the education I was looking for and I am most proud that I've been able to share that education with so many others along the way.

So that's the story and I am very thankful for everyone that has helped to keep this going for the last 5 years.

Hope you have a great week!

-Kevin
