SJUK Security Spotlight: Best of 2024 - Part 1!
Soldier, strategist and scholar
SJUK speaks exclusively with ex-military leader Sir Richard Shirreff , Co-Founder of risk and advisory business, Strategia Worldwide and Chair of the Healix Risk and Security Advisory Board.
Sir Richard Shirreff was born in Kenya in 1955 where he lived until the age of eight.
Educated in England, he graduated from Exeter College, Oxford with a degree in Modern History before being commissioned into the British Army from Sandhurst.
“Those early years in Kenya really shaped me,” he says. “It was a very different world from the UK at that time and I think those who grew up there looked at things differently."
The need for innovation
SJUK speaks to Jason Boyce ASyl , Commercial Product Manager at ABLOY UK , to find out more about the company’s latest product innovation.
Having started his career in the security industry over 20 years ago, Jason noted that he’s found no two days the same.
From being a Sales Manager in his early days, Boyce’s journey to Commercial Product Manager at Abloy UK has been unique, considering the different sectors he’s gained experience in.
Recently, Boyce made the transition from an education sector role to a more product-focused position, which has channelled his attention to the needs of the end user.
Building trust in dark deliveries
Hansel Oh , Director of Product Marketing at Brivo , looks at how integrating modern technology can improve the dark deliveries process.
The ‘dark delivery’ is nothing new. Lorry drivers have long been travelling across UK motorways at all hours to deliver goods on time.
In the case of a dark delivery, drivers have either been met by facility staff at their destination, or entrusted with a key or access code, to drop off their goods.
The change today is that dark deliveries have become more common.
Raising industry standards
James Humphreys , Editor, sat down with SJUK Leaders in Security Conference Chair and Director of Optimal Risk Group Ltd , Rick Mounfield MSc CSyP FSyI , to reflect on the event’s highly successful debut in Manchester.
I’ve been in the private security industry for 12 years now. I left the Royal Military Police after 22 years in 2011, in fact, my last paid day in the Army was the 11/11/11 (a Palindrome); which I spent in London at the Armistice Day commemoration ceremony with many of my friends. It was a memorable day.
Over the last 12 years, I’ve been a consultant, initially advising the ultra-high net worth sector, before joining The Security Institute in 2017 as the Chief Executive.
I had been a member for 5 years at that point and when the opportunity arose to help build it into something greater, I had to apply.
King Charles III named Royal Patron of Corps Security
King Charles III has been named Corps Security ‘s Royal Patron.
His Majesty’s appointment began in May 2024, following a review of more than 1,000 Royal Patronages by the Royal Household following The King’s Accession in September 2022.
“The Corps of Commissionaires has been helping veterans in need since 1859 and this still holds true to this day,” said Mike Bullock , CEO at Corps Security.
“We are honoured that the Monarch has chosen to continue to support our organisation, first established with His Majesty King Edward VII in 1901.”

We’re reaching a tipping point: the future of physical security is squarely in the cloud, yet many organisations have yet to make that transition.
This bears out in the data from Verkada’s State of Cloud Physical Security Report. In a survey of more than 1,500 security leaders, 92% said they believe the future of physical security is in the cloud.
Despite this near-unanimous agreement on the direction of the industry, about a quarter reported that they still haven’t transitioned to the cloud.
The power of partnerships
John Lutz Boorman , Head of Product & Marketing at Hanwha Vision Europe, explores the importance of selecting the correct surveillance manufacturer.
From cybersecurity to sustainability, the challenges that today’s organisations face make the correct choice of manufacturing partner is more important than ever.
Businesses today must manage a range of unique challenges as they balance investment in technology and skills necessary to bring growth, while also controlling costs, protecting supply chains and mitigating cyber risks.
All while meeting increasing demands to incorporate more sustainability-focused practices and use new technologies, such as AI, in a responsible way.
