SJUK Security Spotlight: Strengthening core capabilities; What if security is capable of so much more?
Strengthening core capabilities
Dr. Beverly McCann, Director of Product at Darktrace speaks to SJUK Editor, James Humphreys, about how the company remains at the forefront of cybersecurity innovation.
I’m Beverly McCann, Director of Product at Darktrace. I’ve been in this role for almost a year now, but I’ve been with the company for over five years. My journey into cybersecurity wasn’t a conventional one.
My background was originally in academia – I hold a PhD in biology – before I started at Darktrace as a Cybersecurity Analyst, which was a good fit with my analytical expertise.
Over the years, I’ve worked with hundreds of customers, helping them navigate complex environments, respond to cyber incidents and make the most of Darktrace’s capabilities, which are all based on our ActiveAI Security Platform.
What if security is capable of so much more?
Spencer Marshall, Executive Vice President UK and Europe, Gallagher Security explores whether the security industry could be doing more to create a positive impact on the world.
When it comes to securing doors and granting access, we’ve got that locked and bolted, that is after all, the foundation on which the security industry is built.
However, in an age where technology and innovation are evolving at rapid pace and the threat landscape continues to shift, customers are looking for solutions that remain steadfast in their core functionality, while also unlocking a world of new potential and greater business value.
It’s an exciting time for our industry.
How to build a modern and smart security system
Lawrence Peters, Head of Sales for UK and Ireland at OPTEX Security EMEA, discusses modern intrusion detection systems and the benefits it provides end users.
Intrusion detection refers to the process of identifying unauthorised entry, movement or potential security breaches in protected areas or buildings.
It is the cornerstone of a reliable security system, triggering immediate and accurate alerts to prevent potential threats and protect assets and people.
Crucially, early detection of a potential intrusion allows security teams to respond quickly, increasing the chances of deterring any attempted theft or damage and minimising any disruption.
Protecting your property
John Brown, Senior Marketing Executive at Videcon, looks at the importance of an effective intrusion detection device during daylight saving hours.
Statistics show that there is a clear increase in crime rates to residential and commercial properties across the UK during the months of October-March.
According to Co-op Insurance, there is a 34% increase in reported crimes during the period of shorter daylight-saving hours.
Ensuring the correct intruder system is installed will aid in the reduction of potential damages, theft and loss when these crimes occur and can be used to provide authorities with crucial information where necessary.

Jacksons Fencing has successfully delivered a fencing solution for the Newbury Bus Station redevelopment, with the aim of enhancing both safety and aesthetics.
As part of West Berkshire Council’s ambitious project to upgrade public transport infrastructure, Jacksons Fencing was specified to deliver a solution that not only met stringent security standards, but also blended with the station’s modern redesign.
Jacksons Fencing installed 90 metres of Sentry vertical bar fencing, a robust and modern vertical bar railing system designed for high-traffic public spaces, the company says.
Constructed from hot-dip galvanised tubular steel, the Sentry fencing system is capable of withstanding the daily wear and tear of a busy bus station.
Product Focus: Motorola Solutions unveils new body camera for frontline workers
Motorola Solutions has released V200, a body camera designed to help protect frontline workers in stores, hospitals, hotels, schools and stadium.
The V200 body camera is a discreet, lightweight addition to a worker’s uniform.
The recording feature can be activated with the push of a button to document a situation, which also serves as an effective deterrent for unwanted behaviour.
In more serious scenarios, such as medical incidents or crime, activation of the GoLive Audio feature can engage security personnel or a supervisor, who can access live video and audio and interject via the camera’s speaker.
