Synergy of the Fitness Industry? How we need to start thinking...

Life is constantly changing for us all and so is the fitness industry.

The past few years for me as a consultant, has allowed me to see various aspects of the industry. From developing education for global brands, writing programming for large leisure trusts and operators, working for Fitness product distributors, retailers to being a gym user myself. But through the varied roles that I have worked, I can’t help but recognise, that the competitiveness of the industry has lead to the inability for some companies to oversee obvious synergies that could grow their business.

Have you thought about linking in with other businesses, products or PT’s who you could share work with?

You don’t have to fight to be the best of the best, to do well in the fitness industry. You must simply recognise what you believe in and what you stand for. What are your strengths and weaknesses and who are the people or businesses who you can link in with to make your brand stronger.

Take for example a boutique HIIT studio, could you link with another local non HIIT studio to provide a joint membership to enable your members a wider spectrum of facilities. Could an inner-city gym have synergies with the commuter belt gyms for weekend memberships? Look at what the end user wants in a membership? Think outside the box (or city limits)

Education and product brands.

We all know product education upsells product sales, but we compete against each other to be the ONLY product that the trainer/club needs.  If product education were to look at the picture from aspect of the trainer, the way we deliver it could change enormously. If you think that compared to 10 years ago the average earnings of a PT has a lower threshold than ever before as more and more clubs charge higher rent. The PT working week is a 40 – 50 hrs, so can that trainer afford to miss 2 days potential earning days to attend 1 course for 1 piece of kit?

What will make your training more readily at the fingertips of those trainers?  Online training? possibly, but with experience people like to touch, feel and have those lightbulb moments to completely understand why they should be using the piece of kit.

Let’s start working together again, to keep developing this industry from our grass roots service providers, our trainers, management to experiences our members truly want to be a part of.

Fantastic piece Sue and great idea. I work with many clients in music , DJ’s and entertainment - it always amazes me the levels of collaboration and partnerships that exist outside fitness. I see more signs of this with takeovers etc but still plenty to work towards. Here’s to synergies. Best.
