To support relief efforts, Airbnb.org is partnering with local organizations to provide free, emergency housing to survivors, volunteers, and first responders. Earlier this year, massive floods displaced 600,000 people and destroyed 200,000 homes in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Two-time Paralympic fencer Vanderson Chaves was among those forced to evacuate. He lost everything in his home, including his fencing equipment, medals, and passport, and thought he might miss his chance to qualify for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. Airbnb.org provided Vanderson free, temporary housing in a wheelchair-accessible home near his training center, which allowed him to keep preparing for the Games. During his Airbnb.org stay, Vanderson learned that he made Brazil’s Paralympic team.
