What happens to the science-obsessed kids who keep asking “Why?” Sometimes they grow up to be #DiseaseDetectives at Centers for Disease Control and Prevention! Dr. Lindsay Dahora Hein grew up fascinated by different areas of #science, eventually focusing on #immunology. She says, “I was really intrigued by this concept that people are so susceptible to things that we can’t even see with our own eyes.” As a Laboratory Leadership Service (LLS) fellow, most of Dr. Hein’s time is spent in the lab, but earlier this year she was deployed to investigate possible lead contamination in drinking water in the U.S. Virgin Islands. She helped conduct blood testing in children and helped determine there was no evidence of widespread lead exposure in children from the water or other sources. On a recent visit to CDC Puerto Rico, CDC Director Dr. Mandy Cohen met up with some of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) officers and Laboratory Leadership Service (LLS) fellows.
