Back-to-back meetings can lead to brain fog and higher stress levels. Brain breaks between meetings can lead to reduced stress and stronger cognitive function. Here’s your sign to break up the consecutive meeting invites. Your team's productivity (and mental health) will be better for it. Thanks for sharing, Vitality Global! Read more from the study below:
Do you take breaks between meetings? If you answered ‘No’, then it's a healthy habit you should start. Here’s why: 👇 For many people, taking breaks between meetings has become a thing of the past. We often have work calendars filled with back-to-back calls, with barely enough time to catch our breath before hopping on the next one. But how does this affect our brain? A study conducted by Microsoft’s Human Factors Lab asked participants to attend meetings while wearing devices to monitor the electrical activity in their brains. These meetings were conducted in two sessions. The first session was four back-to-back meetings, while the second session included 10-minute breaks in between. During these breaks, participants were tasked with meditating using the Headspace app to encourage mindful relaxation. The results were astounding. When participants attended back-to-back meetings, the activity of beta waves (those associated with stress) increased significantly in the brain. However, when the same participants were given breaks between their meetings, the average beta activity notably dropped. What’s more, there was no build up of stress even as the meetings progressed for those who had taken the time to reflect and meditate. Those that took meditation breaks showed increased levels of focus and engagement in meetings. This was measured by positive levels of alpha symmetry in brainwaves, which correlates with higher engagement levels – showing how short breaks not only decreases stress, but increases focus and engagement. Building a habit of taking short breaks between meetings has a massive impact on many aspects of our cognitive function and ultimately makes us more productive, focused and less stressed. The lesson? Prioritise your wellbeing by taking pauses throughout your work day. Encourage your colleagues to do the same. Not only will your mind and body thank you, but you will be creating a work culture that is more supportive, nurturing and productive. #LiveLifeWithVitality #BrainHealth #Productivity #Mindfulness #HealthyHabits
