About us

The International Capital Market Association (ICMA) Future Leaders initiative is designed to benefit the younger generation of finance professionals in ICMA’s membership, connecting them with the services and networking opportunities which can enhance their careers in debt capital markets. ICMA Future Leaders focuses on three core areas: Career Progression; Education; and Networking. It is led by a steering committee composed of 20 individuals in the early stages of their capital markets career, drawn from ICMA member firms across Europe and Asia. A full list of the committee members can be found on the ICMA website www.icmagroup.org/futureleaders. The committee meets regularly to provide input to ICMA on how it can better communicate with their peers, addressing the needs and concerns of those just starting out in their careers, as well as to generate ideas on events and initiatives which are specifically designed for market participants like them. Open to all staff at ICMA member firms, the initiative aims to develop a sense of community between junior colleagues across geographic borders and functional areas, such as already exists at a more senior level amongst ICMA members. It works alongside member firms’ own graduate programmes and internal youth networks. You can contact us by email at futureleaders@icmagroup.org or see www.icmagroup.org/futureleaders

Legal Counsel, South African Reserve Bank

Last week, I had the incredible honour of receiving the Governors' Award. The award is in relation to the new settlement framework for South Africa's Gold and Foreign Exchange Reserve Account (GFECRA). This highest level of recognition at the SARB follows a Head of Department award for the same project, which I received a few weeks ago. I am deeply grateful for the acknowledgment and recognition granted to me. In truth, my gratitude extends beyond the HoD and Governors' awards - it is an honour and priviledge to contribute to the work of the SARB, and to do it with such incredible colleagues. It was the combined effort of these colleagues that brought GFECRA to fruition. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of the GFECRA journey. Here's to our countinued #PurposefulJourney

ICMA - International Capital Market Association Women's Network APAC representative and Executive Director, Global Markets Division at Crédit Agricole CIB, Desiree Sumilang, answered our questions about gender equality in the workplace. ❓ Greatest enabler for gender equality: 🎤 Supporting women and men with family aspirations and responsibilities. This support comes from leadership fostering an environment that promotes open communication, flexible working and the use of technology. ❓ How you’ve addressed gender inequality at your firm: 🎤 Beginning with an internally commissioned survey, my firm’s leadership has started a frank and open discussion globally to identify why the majority of women that begin their careers at the firm are not rising through the ranks to take up senior positions. ❓ Worst advice you’ve received: 🎤 I joined a London law firm despite advice from a professor who called it a “career killer” to work outside of my home country. It turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. As someone who thrived in an international setting, it was perfect. ❓ Biggest passion outside of work: 🎤 My biggest passion outside of work is my family. My schedule before and after work revolves around three young children, starting at 6 am until bedtime. My other passion is to support the institutions that have enabled me to pursue the career that I have today. I do this by serving on the boards of my educational institutions and Allen & Overy. I am often the only Asian face, the only woman, the only American national or the only overseas person in a board meeting. As such, I feel a duty to be seen and heard on behalf of many others like me who are not present. ❓ The future for women in 3 words: 🎤 Visible. Empowered. Included. #IWN #WomensNetwork #ICMA #DEandI https://lnkd.in/dMx7Ge9

Chair of ICMA - International Capital Market Association's Market Infrastructure Advisory Group and Head of EMEA and APAC and CEO at MarketAxess, London, Christophe Roupie, answered our questions about gender equality in the workplace. ❓ Greatest enabler for gender equality: 🎤 A little less conversation, a little more action please! Action, not words, will be what drives us to true gender equality. Those in positions of power and influence will need to have the courage of their convictions. ❓ How you’ve addressed gender inequality at your firm: 🎤 Both top-down and bottom-up. We’ve actively recruited new female members of our board of directors and we've reshaped our recruitment processes to ensure absolute equality and diversity in our hiring. A special achievement has been the development of the Women at MarketAxess network, a global initiative offering female employees an opportunity to grow their network, develop skills and ultimately grow their careers. ❓ Main challenges for women in the period ahead: 🎤 The challenges ahead are no doubt the same as the challenges behind. Stereotypes, bias, intractable industry frameworks and expectations. ❓ Best/worst advice you’ve received: 🎤 Rather than answer this directly, I think I will just say this: In life we receive a lot of advice, not all of it wanted and not all of it good. I think the key is to follow your own advice and be your own best advocate for change. ❓ Biggest passion outside of work: 🎤 The unconditional love I have for my wife and my two boys, and their unconditional support for my professional life. It makes everything else much easier. ❓ Further actions that ICMA can take to promote gender balance: 🎤 The success of the IWN in the past 10 years has been phenomenal, growing from a small presence in the UK to thousands of members across multiple jurisdictions. Keep growing, numbers matter. #IWN #WomensNetwork #ICMA #DEandI https://lnkd.in/dMx7Ge9
