About us

The International Capital Market Association (ICMA) Future Leaders initiative is designed to benefit the younger generation of finance professionals in ICMA’s membership, connecting them with the services and networking opportunities which can enhance their careers in debt capital markets. ICMA Future Leaders focuses on three core areas: Career Progression; Education; and Networking. It is led by a steering committee composed of 20 individuals in the early stages of their capital markets career, drawn from ICMA member firms across Europe and Asia. A full list of the committee members can be found on the ICMA website www.icmagroup.org/futureleaders. The committee meets regularly to provide input to ICMA on how it can better communicate with their peers, addressing the needs and concerns of those just starting out in their careers, as well as to generate ideas on events and initiatives which are specifically designed for market participants like them. Open to all staff at ICMA member firms, the initiative aims to develop a sense of community between junior colleagues across geographic borders and functional areas, such as already exists at a more senior level amongst ICMA members. It works alongside member firms’ own graduate programmes and internal youth networks. You can contact us by email at futureleaders@icmagroup.org or see www.icmagroup.org/futureleaders

What an amazing start to the first ever ICMA Future Leaders Senior Coffee Connection with ICMA - International Capital Market Association Chair of the Board of Directors Janet Wilkinson! Going back to the roots of what we do, this intimate event brought together 15 young professionals for an honest conversation on how to succeed in this industry. Some highlights: ☝️This industry rewards the ones who diligently analyze, propose and execute change. Don’t hold back! ☝️Listening - probably the most underrated skillset a young professional should have ☝️The ‘Generational Gap’ is here and it’s impacting the industry, both sides must consciously work together to overcome it ☝️Be honest with yourself. Know what you want to achieve, but understand that sacrifices will have to be made ☝️Get a sponsor! There is no such thing as a 100% self-made professional in this industry. This was just our first Senior Coffee Connect and Celia Price has laid the foundation for many more to come across all our member regions. Thanks to Ravina Patel for helping to organise this event and to Mizuho for hosting us. Enter the ICMA Future Leaders Essay Competition! 📣 Professionals with a maximum of 8 years experience in financial markets and who currently work for ICMA member firms are invited to take part in the ICMA Future Leaders (IFL) essay competition on the theme of ‘Navigating the future of finance: Transforming capital markets for new talent’.  In the post pandemic era, the allure of a career in traditional financial markets appears to be challenged. A survey by the Economic Times reports that in 2022, 65% of the moves by middle and senior level executives were to other industries, with departures more than double than those of new hires. This is further compounded by: ◾ demographic challenges as the baby boomer generation gradually retires; ◾ the shift in values and changing social priorities among Gen Z - sustainability is now a top priority; and ◾ advancements in technology. All of these factors today add fuel to the “war for talent”. How to participate 👉 Essays should address the theme of how the industry can better align with the values and expectations of the next generation considering the fast pace and demanding environment of capital markets; as well as look into the innovative strategies and culture shifts needed to redefine the capital market to continue its appeal as a career destination for young professionals. 👉 The essay should be in English between 2,500 and 4,000 words in length. One contribution per person is permitted. 👉 It should be submitted as a word document double line spaced, with your full details (name, email, telephone, job title, company name and up to date CV). 👉 The essay should be an original piece of work from the contributor, not previously submitted to other competitions. AI generated essays will be disqualified. 👉 The essay author must be working for an ICMA member firm at the time of the submission deadline and the date of the award event. The deadline for submission is 31 October 2024. 👉 Essays should be submitted to: futureleaders@icmagroup.org. 🏆 The winning entry, to be announced in November, will receive: ◾ a €3,000 cash prize; ◾ a mentoring opportunity with the Chair of the ICMA Board;  ◾ a complimentary place on an ICMA online training course of their choice; ◾ the opportunity to have their essay published in select ICMA publications as well as present it at an ICMA Board meeting and at an IFL event. There will also be two runners up, who will receive €1,000 cash prize each and a complimentary place on an ICMA online training course of their choice. CEO at Vienna Stock Exchange | Passionate about Entrepreneurship, Business & Investing

Don't just be a stormtrooper, strive to be Ahsoka Tano! – a powerful quote from Harald Kroeger (Raiffeisen Bank International AG) that resonated with me during the first-ever ICMA Future Leaders event in Vienna. Together with Angelika Sommer-Hemetsberger (Oesterreichische Kontrollbank AG) and Katja Bauer (Synergy Management- & Unternehmensberatung GmbH), we shared key insights on the essential skills for building a successful career in finance. This requires less of a lightsaber than communication/social skills, sometimes a little rebellious thinking and the mindset to make a contribution to the company's success. It was truly inspiring to see so many ambitious young professionals eager to learn how to stand out in this constantly evolving industry. A big thank you to Matthias Szabo, regional chair of ICMA Austria, for the warm welcome. Congratulations to the ICMA IFL representatives Alexander Schierlinger and Katsiaryna Souvandjiev, MSc (WU) FRM for organizing such an impactful event! 📷 by Maria Mamaev/RBI #capitalmarket #empowerment #nextgeneration #finance ICMA - International Capital Market Association
