At CULES (Cambridge University Locomotive Engineering Society), we bring together Engineering Tripos students at the University of Cambridge with a shared passion for railway engineering. Our mission is to design and build a 10 1/4” gauge locomotive to compete in the IMechE Railway Challenge, an annual test of innovation and technical skills at the Stapleford Miniature Railway. As an extra-curricular team, we apply our engineering knowledge in a practical setting, gaining hands-on experience in locomotive design, manufacturing, and problem-solving. In 2025, we are entering the Entry Level competition as a stepping stone towards manufacturing our locomotive and competing in the track-based challenges in 2026. I'm very excited to be apart of this team together with the amazing people who have joined MREx. Our focus is on the entry-level challenge in June for the IMechE Railway Challenge, which requires us to fully design a 1/5th scale locomotive from scratch. We will then be competing in the 2026 full challenge with a locomotive built by our team of aspiring Engineers.

Meet the next generation of rail engineers! After a successful recruitment round, we're thrilled to unveil our newly expanded MREx Team structure! The team is already hard at work on concept designs for the Undercarriage, Carbody, and Energy & Traction Systems, gearing up for the entry-level competition at the IMechE Railway Challenge this June.
