In a piece for The New York Times, 2023 award winner Sofia Quaglia shares the story of a recently discovered “toadlet” in Brazil that is the second-smallest vertebrate known to exist on the planet. “Given that the Brazilian Atlantic forest has been severely deforested, learning more about these tiny frogs aids their conservation. ‘So much of our biodiversity, known and unknown, is small and camouflaged and, not surprisingly, often goes unnoticed,’ said Luís Felipe Toledo, a herpetologist at the University of Campinas in Brazil.” Read more at: https://lnkd.in/gf3A6-k7 #sciencecommunication #biodiversity #wildlife

Still in shock about this, but I'm overjoyed to have won two awards at the end of this year. First, the SciComm Excellence Top Early Career Science Journalist from The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in partnership with Schmidt Sciences. This prize highlights a series of my articles (linked in the comments) about the quest to answer some of humanity’s deepest questions. It's an honor to be featured alongside so many talented science communicators. https://lnkd.in/ePGby-eQ Second, the David Perlman Award for Excellence in Science Journalism from the American Geophysical Union selected my story in Science Magazine about how the hand magnets often used to identify meteorites erase precious information about our solar system. It's a special joy to share this recognition with Nadia Drake, who first introduced me to this field by warmly responding to a cold email from a clueless undergraduate. https://lnkd.in/eAQQJRQ7 I am immensely grateful for all the mentors, editors, colleagues, family and friends who have encouraged and supported me — and all the inspiring scientists who shared their stories with me.
