The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season is pacing above average, with notable rapid intensification of hurricanes. Here’s a breakdown of where the season stands compared to historical averages: 📊 2024 storms to date (1991-2020 seasonal averages) • 13 named tropical storms (14) • 9 hurricanes (7) • 4 major hurricanes (3) 🌀 Rapid intensification Hurricanes Beryl, Helene, and #Milton all rapidly intensified over the Gulf’s warm waters. Notably, Milton reached Category 5 force twice, a rare feat. #HurricaneMilton’s winds increased by 92 mph in just 24 hours during a round of rapid intensification, which is considered extreme. 🌀 Gulf landfalls Milton was the fifth hurricane to make landfall along the US Gulf Coast, following Helene, Francine, Debby, and Beryl. 2024 ties with 2005 and 2020, ranking 2nd for the number of Gulf hurricane landfalls. 🌍 Climate impact Ocean heat content is above average, with sea-surface temperatures in parts of the Gulf made up to 400-800x more likely by climate change, according to Climate Central, Inc. 📈 ACE Index The 2024 accumulated cyclone energy (ACE), a measure of tropical cyclone intensity and duration, is at 141 — 134% above average as of October 13th. #HurricaneSeason #ClimateChange #ExtremeWeather #Atlantic
