Vice-Dean, School of Law; Head - Master of Taxation Programme at Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS)

University Convocation is usually such a big affair from the university's perspective, that sometimes, I feel that the smaller programmes (like the Master of Taxation) gets lost in all the celebration of the larger programmes. So I do make it a point to clap for my MTax students; and clap loud and long. For every one of them it is a big achievement, born of late night Tutor-Marked Assignments and End-of-Course Assignments, many coffees and (hopefully!) long discussions with classmates. There would have been uncomfortable moments ("I have to write - how many words ... but there's only one issue here... you mean there's more to write???"). There would have been "A-ha!" moments ("Ohh...So that's why they used Mauritius...!") and there would have also been "just-finish-the-d*mn-essay-and-submit-something" moments. Through all of these, somewhere along the way, I hope they also learned about how to live and work with taxation - international, domestic or both. The journey of the MTax student is not be the one who knows everything there is to know about tax, but to be the one that is not fazed by anything that comes out about tax. And to be the one that says, "I think I can deal with that." To the graduates of the MTax programme of 2024 - Belinda, Owen, Oorvahsk, Lai Fan, Pameela, Uthai, Spencer, Vicknesh and Junzheng: Congratulations! You have made it through the programme, and have earned the MTax after your name! #susslaw #SUSSSchooloflaw

At the recent webinar titled “Recent Legal and Regulatory Developments in Digital Currencies” organised by the SUSS School of Law, the evolving treatment of digital currencies as “money” was discussed and attracted a large number of participants from the legal profession. The speakers, Mr Lance Ang from #SUSSLaw, Assistant Professor Rachel Phang and Professor Heng Wang from #SMUYPHSL, and moderator, Dr You Chuanman from CUHK-Shenzhen, provided a fascinating overview of the legal treatment of digital currencies with respect to a breach of contract and insolvency, Singapore’s emerging regulatory framework for stablecoins and recent regulatory measures for digital payment tokens, as well as China’s development of central bank digital currency, the e-CNY.   For a deeper insight into this subject, you can refer to a recent publication by Mr Lance Ang in the current October issue of the Law Quarterly Review (Lance Ang, ‘The Case for Winding up for Inability to Pay Cryptocurrency Debts’ (2024) 140 Law Quarterly Review 496). The publication discusses whether a company's payment obligation that is denominated in cryptocurrency can be considered a monetary claim for the purpose of a creditor's winding up petition of an insolvent cryptocurrency debtor in light of recent legal developments (https://lnkd.in/ec9MSQSR), an issue which has attracted much debate.

SUSS recently hosted an appreciation lunch to celebrate reaching our $200,000 fundraising target for the Tan Hee Joek Scholarship, named in honour of the late Mr Tan Hee Joek who passed away in September 2023. The former President of the Association of Criminal Lawyers of Singapore, Mr Tan was deeply respected in the legal community for his passion for justice and the under trodden. This scholarship was established to inspire many others to serve with honesty and dedication. We extend our gratitude to Mr Tan's family and friends whose contributions made this scholarship possible. It will support two exceptional law students each year in perpetuity, allowing them to focus on their studies and professional growth.
