Melissa works with a wide range of issues, including anxiety, panic attacks, depression, trauma, life transitions and coping with change, work-place stress and relationship issues. She offers short and longer-term therapy to clients from adolescence (16+) to adulthood. Melissa recognises that taking the leap and making an appointment to see a psychologist can be very daunting. I am a psychotherapist specialising in integrative psychotherapy. I approach each client individually by synthesising a range of models, theories and practices. My intention is to work with you to understand how your unique life experiences impact your relationship with yourself, others and the world. In my practice, I am influenced by attachment theory, development and psychodynamic theories, trauma theory and metacognitive theory. I seek to provide a supportive and non-judgmental space, recognising that the human experience is too complex to be approached without curiosity and openness.

Hello my name is Greta, at times we all need a friendly face and someone to listen to our story.  My aim is to walk with you to provide an authentic, honest and trusting space where life's experiences can be shared without judgement.  I work from a biopsychosocial model which essentially means looking at the interconnection of our biology, our psychology and our social connections to help understand how we experience and respond to the challenges we may experience throughout our life.  Whilst we are all unique and different, I describe myself as an eclectic therapist, in that I draw from a range of therapy forms.

Whether you've seen many therapists in your time or this is your first venture into the world of therapy and counselling, it would be my pleasure to support you. Finding a psychologist can be a daunting process, therefore when we meet, I'll provide a calm, relaxed and welcoming environment, and will take the process at your pace. I see adults and young children, and my previous experience as a dancer and teacher brings forth a warm and educational experience to the therapy room.

My approach to therapy is to use an integrated model because every person I work with is a unique individual with their own set of circumstances. I'm open minded, non judgemental and interested in helping clients to explore the contents of their hearts and minds to better understand their internal struggles, interpersonal relationships and how they exist in the world.

Emma is a qualified and registered psychotherapist and sexologist who is dedicated to providing destigmatising therapy that can be playful, cathartic, affirming, and enlightening all at once. She frequently sees clients in her office who are stuck in patterns of overthinking, emotional avoidance, and engaged with numbing tactics to cope. They seek a radiant and authentic version of themselves that they like, that connects with others, and feels inherently worthy of joy. They value themselves enough to hope for more. Emma is currently accepting psychotherapy and sex therapy referrals.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
