I am a Registered Psychotherapist with a passion for working with neurodivergent folks. As someone who only came to understand my own neurodivergency in my late 20s, I am all too familiar with the often-unique trials and tribulations that can arise throughout the lives of neurodivergent people (in addition to the often exceptional capabilities that can be a huge advantage in many facets of life!). I typically work with those struggling with general and social anxiety, depression, screen addiction, task avoidance, acquired brain injury, and/or self-advocacy.

I also frequently support individuals in learning to healthily process and manage emotions as well as those struggling with shame, boundaries, relational conflict and low self-worth among other challenges.
As a Registered Social Worker and therapist, I specialize in helping people work through trauma, depression, anxiety, and addictions. I employ an informed, yet relaxed approach to help the therapy process feel accessible. This approach helps many individuals who are new to, unsure or uncomfortable with the idea of counseling. I use a combination of therapeutic techniques, knowledge of neurobiology, physical health, and our nervous system to help people identify and challenge behaviours, reactions, and patterns they want to change or improve.

I'm passionate about helping folks with ADHD understand and accept themselves. The majority of people I speak to who have ADHD share stories about trying to explain their ADHD struggles to a friend, parent, teacher, etc. only to be misunderstood or not believed. Much of the suffering of ADHD comes from the way others respond to us, and the self-judgmental way we relate to ourselves. My own experience living with ADHD, and hearing about my clients' struggles and successes, has helped me appreciate the many different ways that ADHD can impact our lives, our jobs, our education, and our relationships.

These brains of ours don't come with instruction manuals - figuring out how to navigate life is tough enough, but can sometimes seem impossible when we experience mental health difficulties. I specialize in working with people with BPD (attachment trauma), anxiety disorders, OCD, couples and people with complex difficulties who may have been given multiple diagnoses. Therapy can be a strange process, I try to make it simple and straightforward. We get to know each other, and figure out if we’re a good fit. We get a clear picture of what the problems are, and what’s going wrong (and what’s going right) in your life.

Charles Dickens once remarked that “a wonderful fact to reflect upon is that every hu man is a profound secret and mystery to every other." Despite how unique we all are, we often tend to spend much of our lives suffering, searching for happiness in places we struggle to ever find. Our wounds are the gateways to the most sacred parts of us and when we are open to new possibilities, we find what we had hoped for. It would be my honour to help make those possibilities your present realities.

Male Counsellors

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
