I believe when we feel understood, validated, and supported…we heal. This is what psychotherapy is intended to do. My style is gentle and compassionate. I am an encourager by nature, so can help you identify & build on what you already do well. I am also sensitive by nature and there’s a good chance you are as well (it’s a genetic trait called "Highly Sensitive Person" that shows up in about 20% of the population & about 50% of therapy clients).

Many of us silently cope with difficulties in our lives. But you don't have to. People have the capacity to make positive changes in their lives with the right support and guidance. With support, you will tap into your strengths, find hope, and heal emotional wounds. I work with individual adults who are experiencing mental health issues (anxiety, depression, etc), trauma, phobias, negative self-esteem, family of origin issues, work issues, and relationship issues.

These are strange times in which we have found ourselves. Trying to reconnect and re-engage in our "new" world can be overwhelming and exhausting. What were once little worries are now becoming cycling thoughts with no end. We tell ourselves that it's easier to stay on the couch than it is to venture out, call a friend, start that project, or discover a new interest. Perhaps you feel torn? Part of you knows what it wants to see happen in your life and knows what to do to get you there, but another part seems so intent on convincing you that you don't have the motivation or strength to change; you feel so stuck. I know ways to help.

What is my approach to helping? Just as the body requires nurturing and attention to keep it healthy, the mind also requires maintenance and consideration around how it can be used to create the life circumstances that you desire. I work with individuals and couples that have interest in gaining increased awareness about their ways of being in their lives in order to bring about alternative outcomes. I am a platform for clients to discuss concerns, clarify what would be helpful and strengthen resolve and understanding of personal resources to make a desired change in their lives.

If you are struggling with grief, depression, anxiety or the results of recent or past trauma, having a safe place to talk with a compassionate person can make all the difference in the world. I have a specific interest in working with survivors of childhood trauma. I also offer supervision (virtual) services for other therapists.

New Clients Welcomed! As Dr. Sue Johnson stated, “We are wired for connection” and meant to be dependent upon others. When our relationships experience stress, we feel disconnected, misunderstood, alone, fearful and in pain. Emotional pain, stress, shame, anxiety, anger, trauma and sadness impact all of us. I have come to deeply understand this throughout my 30+ year career listening to and empowering individuals, couples, parents and families in their healing, as well as, via my own personal journey in a life full of loves and losses.

Warm hello, if you are on this site for yourself or a loved one, it may be helpful to know that people seek my services for help with stress, depression, anxiety, pain, trauma, grief and loss. I value the role of humour and compassion to support personal growth and optimal well-being. I believe that life's difficulties are workable and can teach us a lot if we can lean into the discomfort, interrupting our habitual patterns of avoidance, and to relate to our pain (physical or emotional) consciously and compassionately. It is my intention to support you to maximize your inner and outer resources.

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
