Admitting you need help, and getting it, are probably one of the hardest things to do in life. I work with individuals, couples and families. As a counsellor who works with individuals, I help clients identify their problem, collaborately set goals with them, and help them discover tools to cope with their struggles on a daily basis. As a couple's therapist, I help clients improve communication, identify what is driving the relationship difficulties, and help the couple move towards the desired dynamic in the relationship. As a family therapist, I help families resolve their conflicts and improve communication.

Accepting new clients! In person appointments on Friday mornings. EMDR can help you re-process traumatic memories so they aren’t disturbing anymore. Talk therapy can help you learn new ways to understand your feelings. I work with those who have experienced trauma to help them heal and gain a better understanding of how to move forward. I now offer I-CBT to help treat OCD. This is an upstream treatment that targets the obsessional doubt(s) underlying the compulsive behaviour(s). I can help you regain your confidence, re-establish connections with yourself and others, and rebuild your sense of safety.

Therapy can benefit anyone with any type of issue or concern. There are times when we need another perspective or an objective space to talk through some issues. These problems can be big or small, simple or complex, but in the end it affects us all the same. This includes anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, interpersonal problems, concerns about the future, or existential questions or concerns. We can work collaboratively to outline your goals and desired outcome and work through these issues through an integrative lens that puts you and your needs first.

Imagine feeling trapped in a whirlpool of anxiety, unable to pause and take a breath. Or envision a racing mind that won’t slow down enough to focus on the strategies that could help. Conventional therapies might have all the right answers, but the body refuses to cooperate. You know WHAT to do, but your body and brain won't listen! Whether it’s extreme anxiety, hypervigilance, or attention deficit problems, challenges often lie in a constant battle between the sympathetic (fight or flight) and parasympathetic (rest and digest) nervous systems that leave many people caught in an unproductive cycle.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
